Elizabeth Hartman, who played Shelley Winters’ abused blind daughter in A Patch of Blue (for which Winters won her second Oscar), committed suicide by jumping from a 5th floor window in Pittsburgh.

Led by scandal-plagued center Connie Hawkins, who had spent 3 years with the Harlem Globetrotters, the Pittsburgh Pipers won the first championship of the ABA (American Basketball Association).

After winning that championship in 1968, the Pipers moved to Minnesota for the next season. They returned to Pittsburgh for the '69-'70 campaign, then changed their name to Condors the next season. The franchise finally folded in 1972, after the Condors had played some home games in other Pennsylvania cities, and even hosted contests in Alabama (Birmingham) and Arizona (Tucson).

The film The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh is noted both for the number of NBA stars who cameo’d in it, and for being at the top of many lists of Worst Sports Movies. Astrologer Stockard Channing convinces the owner of the Pittsburgh Pythons that they can win if they get players born under the sign of Pisces only, like their star player, played by Julius Erving. As the newly-renamed Pittsburgh Pisces, hey, it worked.

The first-ever slam dunk contest was the ABA’s 1976 contest, won by Dr. J where he performed his free-throw line dunk. He ran the full length of the court and took off from the free-throw line and slammed the ball home. This dunk was repeated by Michael Jordan in the 1988 NBA contest held in Chicago Stadium. Jordan won that year’s contest.
