The US Navy submarine USS Squalus (SS-192) was launched on 14 September 1938 and sponsored by Mrs. Thomas C. Hart. On 23 May 1939 during a test dive Squalus sank with her crew of 59 aboard. 26 men died immediately, and the remaining 33 survivors were rescued by a device created by Lieutenant Commander Charles B. “Swede” Momsen. It was the first-ever rescue of a sunken submarine’s crew. Prior to that, if a submarine sank there was nothing that could be done to save the crew, even if it sank in shallow waters and its crew was still able to communicate with the surface or at least bang out morse code against its hull to nearby rescue divers. The crew would in time expire after all oxygen had been depleted from the boat.
Eleven years after Swede Ingemar Johansson won the world heavyweight boxing title, his homeland banned boxing.
In England and some other parts of the Commonwealth, “swede” is the name used for the rutabega.
Really?

Many of Alan Dean Foster’s distant-future science fiction stories are set in the Humanx Commonwealth, comprised of both humanity and the Thranx, an insectoid race.
Alan Dean Foster wrote the novelized version of Star Wars from George Lucas’s ideas, though it was credited to Lucas alone. He also wrote episodes for Roddenberry’s abortive Star Trek Phase II, including the pilot, which introduced the character of William Riker.

Most of those were trivial skirmishes. Of course, the Beirut Hilton was a tragedy where we lost many of our Marine Corps and Navy brothers and sisters.
As with many (most?) things, I suppose it can be argued. We are aware that some here do not consider Reagan to be great, while some of us do. But since you asked, to show there is basis for the assertion I posted:
There’s this:

Stephen E. Ambrose says:
And then there’s this:
This is not the proper place for a pissing contest of whether Reagan was great or not. If people want to discuss that, it should be elsewhere. Be advised, I have no desire to join that pissing contest. Opinions will differ, but I am very secure in my assessment of his great presidency.
echo7tango, out.
Carrying on then …
The Peep o’ Day Boys was a Protestant secret association in 18th century Ireland, active in the 1780s and '90s and a precursor of the Orange Order. Members were also known as the “Protestant Boys”, “Wreckers”, “Hearts of Steel”, “Oak Boys” and, finally “Orangemen.”
I realized after I posted that my language was a little snarky, so I want to apologize for that.
Snarky Puppy is a Denton, Texas-based instrumental fusion band led by bassist, composer and producer Michael League. Formed in Denton, Texas in 2004, the band features a collective of nearly 30 musicians, referred to as “The Fam” on their recordings and tours.
“snarky,” meaning “irritable, short-tempered;” first noted 1906, from snark (v.) “to snort” (1866), from an imitative source akin to Low German snarken, North Frisian snarke, Swedish snarka.

In 1906, Typhoid Mary was found working as a cook under an assumed name. Eight years earlier she had been discovered to be a carrier of typhoid fever although in good health herself. She was confined by health authorities until her death in 1929 since it was impossible to change her carrier state.
In 1955, at age 18, Mary Tyler Moore married Richard Carleton Meeker, and within six weeks she was pregnant with her only child, Richard, Jr. On October 14, 1980, at the age of 24, Richie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, accidentally shooting himself in the head while handling a sawed-off shotgun. That model of gun was later taken off the market because of its “hair trigger”.
Mary Tyler Moore started her career at the age of 17 as “Happy Hotpoint”, a tiny elf dancing on Hotpoint appliances in TV commercials during the 1950’s series Ozzie and Harriet.
No worries. You referred to “eight years of unbroken peace,” and I merely wished to suggest that the Reagan years were not quite so idyllic.

Mary Todd Lincoln, unlike her husband, came from a quite well-connected and prosperous family. The President joked, “God is content with one ‘d,’ but the Todds must have two.”

Rasputin is often referred to as “The Mad Monk” or, more respectfully, as “Father Grigori”, but he was never properly either a monk (he had a wife and children in fact) nor a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church; he probably was influenced by several small cults in Siberia that practiced flagellation and mysticism, however.
