The Comics Code forced E.C. to shut down most of their profitable war and horror comic books. The zany, satirical “Mad” was among the few titles that survived. Publisher William Gaines turned it into a magazine so that it wouldn’t be subject to the Comics Code. And as long as he ran it, Mad had no advertisements.

The USAF fighter squadron in which Robert Wagner and Robert Mitchum served in 1958’s formulaic The Hunters also used “George” to mean “OK”. The movie used F-84F’s to simulate Chinese MiG-15’s, but the F-86’s used by the “good guys” were real.

Robert Wagner (not the actor mentioned above) represented New York as a United States Senator from 1927 to '49.

Argentina still refers to the islands which it invaded in 1982 as the Malvinas; Great Britain, which recaptured them, still refers to them as the Falklands.

The Falklands War featured the only time that a nuclear submarine has sunk an enemy ship - the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano, a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack under its former name USS Phoenix, sunk by HMS Conqueror.

Though many people think of penguins as Antarctic birds, they are also found in Southern Africa, South America, and several parts of Oceania. The Falkland Islands are home to one of the world’s largest colonies of rockhopper penguins.

In the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers, Sister Mary Stigmata (played by Kathleen Freeman) was referred to as “The Penguin.”

The Youngstown State University athletic teams are nicknamed Penguins.

Youngstown is in eastern Ohio. Ohio was the 17th state to join the Union, and is now led by Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democratic former Congressman first elected in 2006 and now seeing reelection.
