Jack McCall was tried, convicted and hanged two miles north of Yankton, South Dakota in 1877 for the shooting of Wild Bill Hickok. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the Yankton cemetery.

Yankton was the first capital of Dakota Territory. It is named for the Yankton tribe of Lakota/Sioux.

To add realism to the movie, Dances with Wolves, about the Lakota Sioux, a language coach was brought in to teach Lakota to cast members who did not know how to speak it. Because of the difficulty in learning the language, the “gendered speech” aspects of the language were omitted from the lessons. When native speakers of Lakota saw the finished film, they found it amusing to hear Lakota warriors talking like women.

The person who adds ambient sound effects to a movie in post-production is called a “foley artist”. The name comes from Jack Donovan Foley, who invented methods of adding sound effects to the first “talkie” movies in the 1920’s. Many of Foley’s methods are still used today.

In 1914, Jack Foley and his wife Beatrice moved from Long Island to Santa Monica, California, and then to Bishop, California. In Bishop, some 300 miles north of Los Angeles,Foley got a job at a local hardware store. When the local farmers sold their land to the city of Los Angeles for water rights, Foley’s new hometown was in need of a new source of income. Foley knew of the newly formed movie business in Los Angeles and managed to persuade several small time studio bosses that the town of Bishop would be ideal as a location to shoot westerns.
