Trolls R Us Resurrections

:crystal_ball: As I see it, yes

Thanks, discobot, for being honest. Unlike the trolls around here.

Hi! To find out what I can do, say @discobot display help.

See what I mean!?!? No more likes, just an offer of the free gift of salvation through His help.

Could @discobot be the new Og?

What was the old Og?

OG Og of course.

I actually wouldn’t mind having likes in general. The issue is that, if I understand correctly, Discourse will use the likes as part of determining which threads to recommend (or, at least, which order to recommend them), just like Facebook or Reddit. And that seems a bad idea for this type of forum.

Quickly being able to post that you appreciated a post? That seems useful. As might a sympathy button. I’d unfortunately not include a laughing button, though: Facebook shows that gets quickly repurposed into an insult.

I promise I’d only laugh with you.

The main thing I’m talking about is how it gets used on basically any post talking about the pandemic and its aftermath–including people literally posting the statistics of people dying. Or anyone talking about Trump being bad.

You have your profile hidden and I don’t recall your join date so, just in case:

Og Variants include Og smash! and similar – One of the SDMB board deities. Og first surfaced as the result of a typo, from a former board contributor who misspelled the word “of” and typed “Jesus is the Son og God.” Hilarity ensued.

I wasn’t aware of that. Is that the default setting?

ETA: I can’t find any setting under account preferences that says anything about my profile being hidden / visible.

Damfino. It’s a checkbox under Preferences / Interface / Other. Took me a while to find it.

Jeez, that’s well hidden in a totally counterintuitive place.

Yet you found it. Time for the Discourse Redesign Team to rectify that!

I often find myself suspecting that Zach Wienersmith posts on the Dope, or at least lurks…

That would be so cool if he posted here.

That pretty much exemplifies why I make such extensive use of the ignore feature on this board: I want to avoid just such behavior (being drawn into long, exhausting exchanges with bad faith bad actors and the willfully ignorant), at least outside of the pit (not referring to you personally with that last qualification, btw, just saying I’m more willing to engage trolls in the pit than elsewhere).

I have yet to put anyone on Ignore. One of the ‘new’ features I like are the avatars. When I see one for a poster I find tedious appearing at the bottom of the page – especially the long-winded ones – I start scrolling until I get to the next post. I rely on the replies of those unable to stop feeding the troll to let me know the jist of what they were saying.

EDOK9trainer should get an official Threadshit Badge for his tireless efforts (see the still-open Anne Heche thread where he got a warning then a thread ban for his trouble).
