Usually more of a dull Thud!
We were sailing, adjusting the battens in preparation for the regatta. Out of nowhere the mast fell. We wrestled with it, laying it across the trampoline. My friend (the captain) jumped into the water and held onto the stern, kicking for propulsion, while I manned the rudders.
There was a crowd on the beach watching, preparing to rescue us if need be, but we brought the boat to shore.
There was another time we were sailing at a local lake (Moraine Park). My friend had just installed a new righting system. We were sailing back and forth, intentionally and gently laying the boat over on her side, then using the righting system to bring her back upright. We were doing this very well.
Meanwhile, our wives are on shore watching. They overheard a couple near them talking about what idiots we were, unable to sail without flipping the boat over.
Or even the poon tang.

Is it a boom tang, a boom vang, a boom end tang, a mast vang, or a mast tang for the boom vang?
Watch out for the boomslang.

Before you listed all of these, you should have warned us that “this is my boom schtick”.

By the way, while being hit by a boom hurts, it doesn’t typically make a booming noise.
And the boom swings around regularly and sometimes fiercely when tacking. Particularly interesting in a medium-size sailboat where the height of the boom is roughly at about the level of the cranium of a standing adult.
No, I’ve never been hit. As a previous sailboat owner and exalted Captain, I was usually the one at the wheel yelling orders to the crew and warnings to the various hapless landlubbers aboard.

I bet you’re great at yelling, “Yar!”
In this case, loathe as I am to admit it, I think @octopus makes a decent point. Whether it’s allowed or not, the optics aren’t great when a moderator says “I’ve started the work to get such-and-such banned. I’m just waiting for the other mods to agree with me” in a public forum. It sounds sinister, even if it’s not.
It’s like the old adage: there doesn’t have to be an impropriety, just the appearance of an impropriety.
It just rubs me the wrong way. I don’t know that I can articulate what I find so wrong about it.
That’s part of what I meant by the blurred lines. There is a subset of folks whose life mission it is to generate board drama and when mods are chummy with those folks it’s a bad look. Secondly, when posting such information how can one even respond given the board’s byzantine rule set? It’s a mod action. There has never been sanction given for agreeing with mod action or recommending mod action outside of ATMB but it’s still a mod action and that does, in theory, limit how one can respond to it.

Or small ones, at the level of the cranium of a sitting adult. I’ve been beaned by the little ones, but have managed to avoid the big booms.

Is there an actual rule set? I figured ‘don’t be a jerk’ and ‘extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence’ were simple enough to keep one out of ‘trouble’ here.
How can you expect a sealion to sealion if you create such an unfriendly environment for sealions?
The rules are so complicated that only 99% of posters can figure out how to operate here without issue.

When one chooses to live in the corners, one dies by the corner cases. And that’s where any ruleset, including SDMB’s, starts getting complicated. Of necessity, given the ugly realities of population-scale human nature.
Otherwise, it’s exactly as you and @JohnT say.
Man, YWTF is really awful in that ATMB thread. “We can’t talk about anything here!” “Do you mean anti-trans bigotry?” “Oh, no, I’m not falling for that pile-on” “???”
That Biden comment, claiming, incorrectly, that Biden is more popular with men than women, and how we could never discuss that here was really head-scratching, until I realized that she would blame those (false stats) on the trans community.
In the total absence of anything to the contrary I’m at a loss as to how we’re to conclude anything else.
I wasn’t sure if she really fit the troll thread, so I reanimated my old thread. But seeing your post makes me realize this disingenuousness is basically trolling. So I’ll copy my post over here:
So now YWTF has come back. She tried to get away with violating her topic ban in the Pit first.
But then she’s decided to come into ATMB and simultaneously arguing that bigotry against black people made it difficult to post here, but whining about not being able to discuss her bigotry against trans people. She complains about echo chambers, while she’s the one who kept repeating lies from TERF echo chambers, despite us debunking each one. And she’s the one who engaged in full on bigoted harassment by mocking someone’s suicidal tendencies, saying they were fake.
She claims “women” are being silenced and not transphobes. Just like a racist claiming that white people are being silenced.
She has become a one-note poster and is topic banned on that dissonant note, so she’s complaining that this board is intolerant. Damuri Ajashi (or whatever) has become one-note on elite school admissions. I’m sure there are other one-note posters, too. I’m not sure it’s trolling, but it sure is annoying. It’s like posters who do nothing other than complain about the board.
I mean, she kind of tips her hand with the “only a pathetic handful of nobodies gets any pleasure reading it” line.
Not that she was particularly hiding it to begin with. A controversial poster comes back after an extended absence just to re-litigate their agenda and tell us how awful we are and how we hate divergent thought? Please. Saw the movie, read the novelization, played the tie-in video game.
The irony here is that the “you guys hate divergent thought and challenging ideas!” posters tend to be the one-note bigots, because “divergent thought and challenging ideas” inevitably translates to “this one terrible thing that I want to talk about.”

And they’re always so unfailingly polite too.

To be fair, being a one-note bigot is divergent thinking and a challenge for others to deal with, whether their position is anti-trans, anti-CRT, anti-“Woke”, or just generally anti-reality.
