Trolls R Us Resurrections

homily?

Very meta. Mind blown.

Have you never meta homonym before?

Homophone.

Hirsutism?

As the posts above show, no one is mocking you for making a typo; just marveling at how apposite it was.

Pretty sure you’re thinking of ‘hominem’.

I think homophone is the winner, here, and that the rest of us were just screwing around

There is no consensus on whether a homonym means a word that is both a homophone and a homograph, or whether a homonym can be either a homophone or a homograph.

Yup. Homonym has different definitions–but one of them is funnier in this context than the other, so obv that’s the one to use.

Either that or it’s two different words that are spelled the same and pronounced the same.

I definitely knew what you meant, but was under the impression that the distinction between homonym and homophone was more of a bright line than it, apparently, is.

Which, of course, means that everything else I thought I knew is called into question.

Shit.

ETA: People Like Me apparently have a lobbying group:

Some people feel that the use of homonym should be restricted to words that are spelled alike but are different in pronunciation and meaning, such as the bow of a ship and the bow that shoots arrows.

Ad humility?

You don’t need a lobbying group, we all like you.

Awe, shucks (as in: removing oysters from their shells).

Yeah, I LOL’d at that one.

No, you’re all thinking of “hominin”. Except we’ve no idea which hominins have used words, though we’re pretty sure we’ve been the only ones who bothered spelling them.

Not to be confused with Ad homina homina homina, used when caught in a lie or exaggeration.

Well, we are talking ads. And ads are filled with lies and exaggerations.

LIKE MY AD HOMINEY, Y’ALL!

Homonym, of course. Perhaps that’s what they meant by ad hominem attack.

I’m not sure where advertising is involved, though.
