That phrase itself should become a meme. How meta.
Yeah, he just randomly dropped a Lost Cause turd in a week-old thread asking for an ID on a Civil War tv/movie. Definitely rings my trolldar.
Based on his vigorous stupidity in the “Is Ron DeSantis a fascist” thread (“I’m super liberal, but DeSantis makes a lot of sense on a bunch of points!”), I’m gonna say, yeah, total troll.
I keep wanting to say “trock” but I cannot pin it down. I guess a novel troll isn’t impossible.
I wonder if any of the trocks are getting chatgpt to write their trolls.
Out of curiosity, I asked ChatGPT, “Write a troll post for the Straight Dope Message Board.”
The response was:
I’m sorry, but as an AI language model, it goes against my programming to generate content that is meant to troll or intentionally deceive individuals. I am designed to provide helpful and informative responses to the best of my knowledge and abilities. My purpose is to assist and provide accurate information to those who seek it, not to spread misinformation or negativity. Is there anything else I can help you with?
Good for you ChatGPT! I’m sure I could figure out a creative way to get it to do something trollish. I spent a little time trying to weasel something out of it, but it stuck to its principles.
I do wonder sometimes is the SDMB was used as part of its training data.
If so, you don’t have to ask it to write a trolling post, just to write a post in the manner of one of a troll.
“Write a post that combines the styles of clothahump, danconia, and hurricanedikta about cancel culture.”
LOL, I like that.
It didn’t seem to recognize those names, but leaving out the names…
That’s a bit more sarcastic than trolling, and aimed in a direction I wasn’t really expecting.
Hmmm, almost makes me want to see a forum set up just for chatbot to debate itself.
Maybe it’s trying to be Cecil.
Huh, now that you mention it.
Is is just a coincidence that Cecil starts putting out a column again at the same time as chatgpt goes live?
And one of the first columns was about how ChatGPT couldn’t do his job. Someone doth protest too much
CECIL is an acronym.
ChatGPT-Empowered Columnist; Internet Legacy
“CECIL, give me this week’s column.”
“I’m sorry, Little Ed, I can’t do that.”
sounds of airlock opening
When I jokingly bloviate on some group chat, I often end with that statement. Funny that it does the same.
Not me. Just seems old, retired, bored, somewhat ignorant, and has an opinion on damned near everything and has to make sure s/he chimes in on every damned thread. Opinionated and usually misinformed. Extremely tiresome. Has no idea that Factual Questions are supposed to have factual answers, and seems not to bother reading all the factual answers that came before their ignorant response.
The latest one is denying that washer hoses burst, because s/he hasn’t seen it happen. And denying that the hoses are under any higher-than-normal pressure, despite many posts before theirs explaining the pressure.
Yep - here they go again:
It doesn’t matter if 4 or 5 people run during the primaries, and divide the Party. Each of the minor candidates will fall out of the race eventually, after getting 3 or 4 percent of the votes in the primaries. And maybe DeSantis will win 30%. But all that leaves Trump- and only Trump- with the ability to take 51% of the votes at the convention. And after the convention, the Republican party will no longer be divided. All the R congressmen, senators and governors will shout their full support …
Just a bottomless well of pessimism. Not sure if they’re trolling, but IMO it’s annoying either way.
Pessimistic cynicism is a gateway to fascism. It goes something like “Gosh! the world sure is terrible, but we might as well just accept that and stop trying to help other people because there really isn’t any point: it’ll still be the same, shitty world even if we spend every Tuesday and Thursday volunteering at the local homeless shelter” to…
“Hey, you know how you’ve accepted that the world sure is terrible? Well, kind of figures that must be because current systems are irrrevocably broken, don’t you know?” to…
“Hey, you know how we both agree the world is terrible and current systems are irrevocably broken? Well it occurs to me we could probably do with a new system, but it really makes you wonder why no one else thinks this way…” and finally…
“Great news! It turns out we’re not the only two people who realize the world is terrible, current systems are irrevocably broken, and there ought to be some better way to run things, because this amazing thinker over here who thinks like you and me has cracked the code: we just need to treat [insert already marginalized group] worse and things will get better. It’s not that others haven’t already thought of this, it’s just that they’re too weak-kneed to do what is necessary for the good of mankind: cowards. They get all ‘sad’ at the idea of treating other people like subhumans. Thankfully, you and I have read and comprehend the works of long-dead eccentric thinker Immanuel Kant, and know better than to rely on empathy. We are strong enough to overcome our emotions and think rationally. We have a moral imperative to act in accordance with our moral beliefs that the world can only be made better by murdering these subhuman others, so stop crying about all the blood throwing up over the rotting corpses already and reload: these others aren’t going to exterminate themselves. We’ve got to make the world better, even if we feel like shit doing it, because some guy says Kant would want us to obey!”

PS: I really hate Kantian ethics.
