Trolls R Us Resurrections

It’s an interesting discussion, even if the OP is kinda obtuse. I learned some new things.

Plus, anyone can say they’re 14. Heck, I’ll do it right now: I’m 14!

No, I’m 14!

phew I was worried I might have to append a meme to that post.

I was worried someone would jump in with “I’m 14 and so’s my wife!”.

Because ew.

Great balls of fire!

We’re not talking about your IQ.

As I commented earlier, I judge our young friend to be impetuous and prone to leaping to ridiculous conclusions based on dubious sources, and then (unaccountably) resisting having those faulty conclusions rectified. Youth, I guess. I hope I wasn’t like that at 14 but I suspect I was.

My kid is now (slowly) growing out of the “know everything” phase, but 14-16 is peak age for that. They know more than anyone else and if they are corrected on anything, it’s because the adult didn’t understand what they were saying. Talking to kids that age can feel like you’re being constantly trolled.

I’d guess the poster is either really 14, or it’s a troll with a kid that age, because they have that teen behavior down cold.

Seems to me it would be an odd subject to pick for trolling. I think the poster’s probably genuine; though also genuinely not a real good listener.

If they are 14, I’d be inclined to try to keep them around; they may grow out of the negative aspects and hang on to the odd interests. And we need people with odd interests on these boards; that’s a sizeable chunk of what they’re good for.

I am not a fan of single-issue posters.

They haven’t been here very long. Maybe they’ll branch out.

And languages are IMO a sufficiently interesting subject that even a poster only interested in languages might be useful. ETA: And I’m not entirely sure that it is only languages – that might be the current focus for a more general interest in preserving heritage; which is quite a wide subject.

But this poster isn’t even interested in languages as a whole. Their whole schtick is about how “minority” languages are treated. They seem to believe they’re all being mistreated but, at least in the case of Tagalog, are unable to explain how.

I have a soft spot for language nerds (being one myself). I’m not smelling troll yet. I see person who has some social anxiety and an uncommon interest. Many of us can empathize with that.

However, I am also looking closely for an “other shoe” with right-wing talking points. Things like English being replaced, or social consequences for racist language.

Have you tried tagalog/Filipino or another creole language?

That’s the “leaping to ridiculous conclusions base on dubious sources” I mentioned earlier.

They don’t know what they don’t know and they don’t know they don’t know it. That encapsulates the teen years perfectly.

And frankly, quite a few teens develop singular interests that they almost become obsessed about. In this case, this could grow into an affinity for linguistics in general, or perhaps a desire to champion language justice – which is not necessarily a bad thing.

My youngest daughter is 9 and she’s constantly “correcting” me with wrong info.

She’s a prodigy.

I don’t think that would match with concern about indigenous languages being lost.

[annoying teen voice]I think you mean “protege”.[/atv]

You’re correct for those informed about languages. But right-wingers think of English as the native language of the U.S. Just like it’s the language of the Bible.

“A not English speaking alien!?! Horrors!!” /s

As if many conservative Christians need another reason to accuse Jesus of being “Woke”
