Trolls R Us Resurrections

Wonderful, informative posts. Nice break from the troll watching. I suppose it’s time to get back to that on this thread, alas.

You should check out North Korea’s abandoned six-year effort to improve what they call Chosungul.

Brand new poster shawn4455 has rezzed an 18 year old thread asking if Jim Henson died from AIDS to suggest he sure did and it was a cover-up to “protect the children.” Uh-huh. Evidence provided? Zero. Several posters are replying politely, but… Yeah. Could be a random blow-in from the wilds of the internet who’s eaten the deadly fruit of the Conspiracy Theory Tree, but even then, those are fundamentally indistinguishable from Trolls anyway most of the time.

I doubt they’ll be back, although it would be amusing if they did.

“Hey all, sorry I haven’t given a reply yet but I just now was able to post bail…”

Whoa, just had a thread disappear out from under me, while I was writing in it – I’ve never had that happen to me before. It was a horrible screed about whether any religious sermons were ever taken seriously by unbelievers/atheists, by a poster named deedee1. I am imagining a sock who was discovered and reported and summarily corn-fielded.

Second time that Troll tried to get in today. I’ll be away now, so hopefully he doesn’t come back.

I’m pretty sure he’s one of our Trocks, but no matter what an obvious troll.

I have. It’s annoying when you’ve put work into debunking someone’s points, but trocks gotta be expunged for the greater good.

Report and run, that’s what I do with obvious trolls. Preparing a thoughtful debunking is just playing into their hands.

Not all trocks are obvious, at least at first.

That has happened to me before.

I consider it a gentle slap on the wrist for feeding a troll. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah, it can be annoying to realize you’ve sunk a fair bit of effort into playing along with a troll. But it’s always a risk unless you want to be so cynical and paranoid that you respond to nothing and no one.

So how about that Taylor Swift movie, eh?

I’ve had it go both ways. In that I’ll see an OP, and think “that’s gotta be a troll!”, flag it, and then come back and a mod hasn’t done anything yet, so I start writing a response and see the Mod come in to cleanse it with holy fire.

I’ve also found threads started that seemed just a bit off, but fair, and bite with a reasonable argument, only to find out (often overnight) that a serial sock was responsible and the thread evaporated like morning dew.

It’s to the point that I always look askance at those questionable threads started much after 11pm EST in the USA, when many of our good mods are resting with their troll-hide boots up on a bench in front of a warming fire.

Well, I was only intending to feed the troll, and since I discard maybe half the posts that I start to write, it might not have happened.

It was Schrödinger’s post!

Yeah, a sock flying under the radar ain’t your fault.

I just realized that poster was the same one who revived a zombie thread about substitute teachers only to criticize three posters from 20 years ago. W_E? closed that down before I saw this thread, and I didn’t make the connection.

Well, 'tis that time of year for :zombie: and :troll: to come out and play!

(okay, was looking for an excuse to use those options for Halloween and R_F gave me a perfect opening)

They’re certainly not interested in braaaaaains.

Wait until you get a PM back from a mod, at least. If they thank you for letting them know and conclude “We’re looking into it,” without anything further, that means they think you’re bonkers. If they write “We agree there is an issue and we’re looking into it” then moderator action is actually being considered.

Or maybe it’s just me that gets those auto replies, because I report so many posts…
