I have to go along with the view that the discussion about Ryan_Liam and the “Phenomenon” should have been in the “What were you thinking?” thread as this guy is not a troll, he’s a credulous moron who apparently doesn’t understand what science is.
But as to why that “debate” thread has grown so long, it’s because the urge to correct credulous nonsense is very strong and is as old as the internet itself; few can resist its siren call …

I realized it was like arguing with a tree that it needs to move out of your way.
You’re wasting your time and the tree is neither going to care nor do what you demand because it’s a tree and it can’t.
I ducked out of that thread and wrote it off pretty early on.
I suppose some of us are driven by a kind of eternal optimism, that maybe this time a well-framed argument might produce enlightenment. But alas, you were right, and I’ve never seen a case where it ever did. This guy actually did acknowledge some of the arguments, but ultimately continued to cling to his lunatic beliefs with a religious zeal. It was basically different variants of, “you raise a fair point, but what about all those extraterrestrials with supernatural powers?” You could almost see facts and logic beading up and rolling off him like raindrops off a newly waxed car.
Heck, I stuck through reading the thread just hoping to have an idea of what the “Phenomenon” is, and nothing materialized.
Now that I come to think about it…
Fighting Ignorance is noble.
But there’s no shame in admitting that it’s fought back, and you’re at an unbreakable impasse, so you shake the dust off your sandals and commit their ignorant contrafactual asses to the atheist equivalent of Eternal Damnation.
And then block them, ignore them, and never feed them again.
I see that natureboy has decided to be less subtle with their shit stirring in their “I pit Zionism” thread. Perfect emotional topic to get board members to shout at each other. It’s not against the rules, but this poster is only here to cause trouble.
ISTR a rule against “let’s you and him fight” threads; I could be mistaken.
The Zionism thread is really just the “I Pit Babale” thread again because apparently one thread for a seriously tired topic in the Pit isn’t enough.
But I’ve had strong suspicions of natureboy for a while now.
natureboy smelled “off” to me from the git go. I’m learning.
Now that is some wisdom right there.
Although for many of these folks, simply skipping the threads they’re prominent in has the same effect without the weird disruptions and leaks caused by the [Ignore] feature. If we had a superignore feature that ignored their OPs, and their posts, and any post replying to a post of theirs, and any post containing a quote of their words, then we’d have a feature that erases them completely enough to leave the remaining thread intact enough to enjoy. Maybe.
Oh yeah, this is definitely the right thread for that troll. That thread was trolling from the start.
I don’t know that it would be possible to have a useful discussion on that topic.
Even if the OP post was empty, leaving only the title, and the OP poster never returned to the thread, the topic itself is sort of hypergolic. It will instantly burst into flames as the usual suspects take their usual sides. And like a modern battery fire, it can’t be extinguished; it’s got to burn itself out after the protagonists exhaust all their fuel. 5K posts later.
It’s sort of trolling genius in the same way the 9/11 attacks were genius.
New poster: TomArrow. Appears to have one post, a pro-Trump post in the “Trump pissed you off today” thread. Calling Trump brilliant and leftists dumb.
Seems a little odd for someone who registered 2 hours ago to make their first post in the Pit, and it be a pro-Trump comment.
