While not an observation original to me, I will point out that a number of their posts, including the Hotel HVAC (by implication) have a lot more casual misogynistic language than I am comfortable with. So I’m not going to say they’re a harmless crank. I understand (even if I don’t agree) that some people find that sort of language “colorful” and in-character, but I still don’t care for it, and it -is- one of the things the board as a whole has been trying to tone down.

I really can’t understand the mindset of someone who will go to those efforts to come back to a message board after being banned. I assume they’re using VPNs and other tricks to hide their real self. Seems like a lot of effort to briefly pull the wool over our eyes.
Anyway, back to your regular troll detecting. I promise that if I’m ever banned, I won’t sock up.

Well, we know about the socks we know about. How many more socks are out there being boring ordinary Dopers and not being detected? No way to know.
Of course for the fussy ones, I see it as the same idea as wanting to have the last word in an argument. “And another thing! Blah blah blah!!1! ^%&%$^%$#3%$$#” [stomps off in a huff].
Honestly, we don’t really care about those either. If someone can sneak back, (not really that hard) and then posts without causing any problems, we have no reason to look into it. I can’t think of a lot of reason to worry about it anyway.

Oversimplifying, the most ‘controversial’ or at least most argued rules/guidelines/etc are for people who can’t deal with a simple concept: don’t be a jerk
