Trolls R Us Resurrections

I have a former GF who’s black. She has a relative who’s a mentally developmentally challenged young man. His functional age is about tween, but unevenly so.

The young man lives with family not exactly in the 'hood, but in a working poor part of town. He and I keep up a slow-motion convo by text / WhatsApp. He doesn’t have that many friends and I’m happy to be one of them.

That totally sounds like something my friend would write. The flaky conjugations, the non-punctuation, the sliding run on sentence with slippery POV that’s really a paragraph, etc. Stylistically that reads very genuine to me.

If this is some troll, he’s got that vernacular style down cold. If not, it’s some socially challenged tween in a bad spot. But how he found us and decided to join and post is the bigger mystery. And MO is the most suspicious thing of all.

Sliced Alone and Degen_Gamblr.

My, but we have similar tastes in trolls.

My thoughts exactly.

I find that their texture is a bit rubbery, the taste reminiscent of stale cigars and discarded week-old Taco Bell burritos, with a dash of overflowing port-a-potties combined with the aroma of ripe roadkilled skunks.

With a large dollop of Stupid Sauce. Can’t forget the Stupid Sauce.

They make their own stupid sauce when you cook them!

I agree with LSL, that does sound stupid in a uniquely adolescent way that would be hard to fake. I wouldn’t suspect it wasn’t real, if it weren’t for the incongruity of an adolescent suddenly showing up on this board.

We really don’t want to be suspicious of people just because they found their way here. We need new people finding their way here.

What’s with nonobaddog in the P&E thread about the State of the Union? I don’t recall having any interaction with that poster before, and certainly don’t recall even seeing them. Apparently, according to a mod note in the thread, they’ve been here for a long while.

Joined in December 2004, according to a quick profile look.

Yeah I flagged that one when I first saw it. As already stated they have a join date of 2004. When I checked their profile a couple of hours ago they only had 10 minutes of read time and maybe a dozen posts? They haven’t done anything too over the line yet, but they check a lot of worrying boxes. To me it looks like a pre-existing account that’s been activated at a most opportune time.

They have been a very infrequent poster – 6 posts in 2004, and 4 more 7 years later in 2011. A sleeper account for trolling? I have no idea. But from the general tone of their posts, this poster seems to enjoy the role of argumentative asshole. The Trump comments were content-free jabs that came completely out of the blue and seemed intended to do nothing more than irritate.

There was another “sleeper” yesterday, in a different thread. There’s a thread in MPSIMS about a writer/blogger named James Lileks, whom a number of us used to read back in the day, but who many of us stopped reading, in part because of his politics. Beruang, a '99er, came out of hibernation for the first time in 13 years, to make four separate replies, each one amounting to, “You are wrong, he’s not a Trumper!”

His reaction to being told not to insult posters?
That he will be very careful to “censor his speech” in the future.

As of the time you posted this, that individual has ceased posting altogether. But continued lurking until a few days ago.

Which is pretty much the definition of a troll.

I don’t agree. People who are being argumentative assholes on purpose are trolls. But there are certainly even well-meaning people who are just naturally stubbornly argumentative assholes.

You may decide you want neither poster around, but one falls into the troll category, the second into the potentially ‘more trouble than they’re worth’ category.

Then you do agree, because if a person “likes” to be an argumentative asshole, they’re doing it on purpose.

Half the people on this board come here to argue with people. That doesn’t make them trolls.

No they don’t!
