Trolls R Us Resurrections

They don’t care about definitions, they’ve got a little gang bang going on.

In the pit thread?

I guess the trigger was how he’s all about how everyone is being so very rude to him, and he’s been nothing but polite.
Denying he ever said what he actually posted. Then whining that his entire post was not quoted.
And pausing to resume later.
Calling others “trolls” when what they were doing was explicitly calling out his asshole behavior.

It’s like he read the sealioning comic, and decided to follow it to a tee.

Trolioning?

That really isn’t the definition of sealioning I use but at least I know where you’re coming from then.

Sealioning refers to the disingenuous action by a commenter of making an ostensible effort to engage in sincere and serious civil debate, usually by asking persistent questions of the other commenter.

From here:
What is Sealioning?: A Type of Trolling | Merriam-Webster.

Yes, good point. There is no attempt at sincere or civil debate… Just a bunch of bullshit, diversions and self pity.

I mean, relying on a dictionary is generally fine, but the word originally came from the comic strip (as M-W admits) and if Merriam-Webster hasn’t gotten the definition yet (which is why there’s a post but not a formal definition), that’s on them, not on us to accept their as-yet imperfect understanding over the original source.

If a thread is about you and the things you write, is it really sealioning (in the sense of appearing out of the blue to address something mentioned only in passing, and then trying to derail the discussion to make it the topic of conversation) to proceed to… talk about yourself and the things you have written?

I thought a key aspect of sealioning was the hijack, not just the… cringeworthy civility.

Meta-sealioning, then? Because the thread is not only about the poster but about specific things the poster has posted. And that has been derailed a few times by the (polite, I suppose) requests to back up assertions and so on. And the Dope loves few things better than getting sidetracked by points of order and being the best kind of correct, after all.

Are you fucking kidding?

Cut out the words “on this board” and you can C&P that post anywhere in the comic in the sealion’s bubbles, after panel 2

The disingenuous mock-civility is a necessary aspect. The hijacking isn’t. Sealioning can be about the topic of a thread.

Point taken, but I think the term “sealioning” is experiencing some mission creep and beginning to encompass “tone policing.” Hence, ALL commentary on the appropriateness of a post’s contents is subject to being classified as “seasoning.”

While I allow that Martin_Hyde’s commentary in this vein is extraneous to his actual argument, I also don’t see it as seasoning. But, as I often find myself needing to remind myself, I’m sharing this planet with people who are wrong.

God dammit.

SEALIONING

I was going to admonish you about the legalities of going after sealioning out of season.

A number of posters are starting to use “sealioning” for posts/posters they disagree with, nothing more.

Sealioning may lately be the term du jour, but the question is a (relatively) simple one. Are they trolling or not?

If you’d prefer, I’ll just call them disingenuous assholes. Better?

D_isingenuous assholes.
Fixed it for ya!

Borrowing @Atamasama 's style for this (and honest-to-god had to stop myself from putting in a poll), but IMHO -

Max_S

Troll: No
Jackass: Yes

Martin_Hyde

Troll: No
Jackass: Probable.

Octoputz

Troll: Hell Yes.
Jackass: Being unkind to poor dumb jackass in this comparison.

You forgot:

D_Anconia

Troll: Too stupid
Jackass: Yep

Words have meanings. “Sealioning” doesn’t mean people you don’t like, which is how it’s being used now.

Stop making me agree with you. I don’t like it. :rage:
