Tropical paradise?

There was a doco on NZ television tonight about two brothers who are minor celebrities in NZ (one on children’s TV. One as a reporter for a news programme). Both their parents are Tokelauan. Their parents came to NZ in the 60’s.

Neither parent had been back since had left and had bought up 4 “all kiwi” kids. The doco followed the families visit back to Tokelau. It was a very emotional programme, bonding with family, visiting places they were told about. Basicaly seeing their roots.

Tokelau is officialy under NZ rule, which in theory (and theory alone means they are NZ citizens and we are Tokeluauan citizens…I know they can come here, not sure about the I can go there bit)

This is a country with less then 1500 people. One …yes One guest house facility.

All of a sudden I feel an urgent need to visit if not move there! (here is the CIA fact book thing
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/tl.html)

So my question to dopers is…would you give up all mod cons to live in a “tropical paradise”. No TV, no net, no airport (closest country is Samoa, 24+ hours away), very very limited phone etc

Well would you? Or do you like comfy life?

Nice for a holiday as they say but wouldn’t want to live there. Unfortunately I didn’t see the doco you mentioned.

I spent some time working on Bougainville Island when I was younger, lived in a saksak and had none of the mod cons. I absolutely loved it at the time as I adore the tropics but these days I’m afraid I prefer all the comforts of life here in the city.
