Trouble in Paradise (Mafia Game Thread)

This is an unusually long first day, but I believe it’s to ensure that the next day doesn’t begin on a weekend. After that, it should settle into a 5/2 rhythm, right?

We could always lobby for shorter days. I don’t think Johnny Bravo would mind amending the schedule if a supermajority of players would like it amended. I’d be fine with this day ending on Wednesday or Thursday, for example.

Da da dunnnn, SUPERMAJORITY!!!

I meant to ask earlier: can you point to examples of Dead Cat’s unnecessarily combative posts?

I would say stick to the schedule . Changing is just going to lead to a whole bunch of debates of if an early end is pro town or pro scum. Then we get a whole bunch of debate as to if people voted for or against an early end as being a scum or town tell, then we loose track of the game due to a game management discussion. Just stick with the posted schedule and no drama can ensue.
Besides I am somewhat tied up over the next few days so an early end isn’t helpful from my point of view.

**Since I didn’t want the game to start on a weekend, it was either a) have a super-long Day 1 or b) have a no-action Night 0 and hold off on starting the Day until Monday. The longer first Day is intended to ensure that everyone has plenty of time to settle in and get going.

I’m generally against hammering unless the setup calls for it specifically. However, if everyone is antsy* to move forward, I’ll end the day early with a supermajority of 11 votes as that’s the closest I can get to 75%.

*in other words, PM me if you feel that this is important. If most people seem to want the change, I’ll comply with the will of the majority.

**

Point taken. However I’m for now keeping my vote where it is since it is at least partially based on light reasoning instead of random cheese-pun hating logic.

Pardon me but: “a vote for the Professor is better than a vote for stinky cheese puns” just doesn’t sing, now does it?

Isn’t it? A vote based on admittedly ambiguous reasoning seems better than complete random and/or spiteful cheese vote.

I’m open to other suggestions…give me a reason to vote elsewhere.

I know I am just one player, but this really has been a hellish week for me at work so I hope we can keep the Day’s End at the previously scheduled time. It’s selfish, but I am going to have more time to put to this game as the week progresses and I want to really have a good go at it.

As it is, I am working through my notes tonight and hope to have more substantive commentary either later tonight, or (more likely) tomorrow night.

No worries, Biotop. It’s just a game, check in when you can.

A reason? sure.

In the last two games 75% of the scum were lurkers. I am not a lurker.
I’m Town. I’m “verbose and friendly”.
I am guilty of indulging in a nostalgic sentiment and forgetting to be paranoid enough.

And, due to the possibility the week may end earlier than originally scheduled:
VOTE SARIO.

He’s a lurker and he’s voted for me.

75% lurker scum is an anomaly. No, I don’t have a long list of statistics here, but I’ve been playing six years and I don’t think that number holds at all. I’m betting the odds are “no better than chance” on lynch-the lurker. Or for that matter, any other D1 idea. Considering I don’t even mind lynching lurkers, I don’t know why I am bothering to point out something that disagrees with you. While we have been rather lucky in the last games, it isn’t something to base lynch-the-lurker support on. To me, lynch the lurker isn’t a bad policy on D1 since it’s always a crap shoot anyway.

“He’s a lurker and he’s voted for me.”

Boo. The lurker part is OK, but the voted for me part is stupid. So what if he voted for you?

Well, when you have your choice of lurkers, why not vote for the one that’s the most emotionally satisfying?

Mahaloth, is not this kind of the opposite of your reason you gave for voting for me? Play over the past two games tells us a bit, but it is only two games. I trust your experience way more than I do trusting what little I have learned from my one game.

I think that your post is similar to what I posted before, though my post was, I suppose, more in reference to player styles. And your post was less cranky the mine.

If you have seen a history of seeing that cranky sick-of-work posters tend to be scum, let us know.

IRConfused, you haven’t weighed in for a few days. What do you think about our current voters and votees? TexCat, how about you?

FYI, my general pattern tends to be a robust post in the morning before work and smaller, less analytical posts during the day. This morning’s post isn’t going to be as robust as I’d like, but I’ll still pop in for quick takes today. Weekends will always be a crap shoot. I may sit and analyze for hours, I may not be able to log in.

This is as good a place to start as any. I took a look at DC and PP’s posts as promised, with this question in mind specifically. Here are some of the more combative or problematic. (“Combative” maybe not have been the best word):

This context is important. This isn’t a combative post, but it shows there was a pivot from lynch the lurker to lynching the loudest.

So a smudge with virtually no reasoning behind it. Given the very early stage of the game, it’s not too troubling, but it led to escalation.

That one sticks in by craw. Thin evidence, strong opinion.

This also sticks with me. Maybe it’s becase PP is generally a pretty non-combative poster even when he’s making accusations. (You too, Astral.) This is more the Plumpudding school of accusation.

This part isn’t as combative, but it makes a point I want to disagree with. We all come into this game with baggage. I watched/played the last two games PP was in and understood exactly what he was referencing regarding cheese, WF Tomba, and lurking. It came off to me as light hearted commentary and inside joking. From an outside perspective, I can see how it might appear sinister, but it doesn’t come off that way to me, with one big caveat:

The light hearted and friendly commentary may be scum snuggling up to townies and trying to establish a townie vibe based on previous experience. It doesn’t feel that way, but it can’t be ruled out.

I want to point this one out too. It’s reiterating one thing I’ve been saying about creating a record. It’s quite townie.

I’m comfortable with the vote on DC for now. We have lots of time before the end of the day. If it comes down to a choice between DC and PP, I think we might learn more from a PP flip, but for now I’ll leave my vote where it is.

I don’t have a history of successful finding scum by any means, except through good investigation results and so forth. People using their night powers and well-timing when they share their info. tend to create high percentage scum lynching. The rest, despite as much as we try, is a huge amount of guess work.

I don’t know if this next idea would count as night-time strategy, but I don’t think so; tonight, I’ll go dig up my previous comments on my thoughts on the game. Or I’ll get to it earlier if I remember. They are in the “improve how we play mafia” thread.

I’ll take this as a compliment!

This was a meaty, substantial post and I like your reasoning. You get a town lean from me, and I’m considering rejoining you on the Dead Cat lynch.

You’re free to take it as a compliment, though I state it neutrally. It’s vibe that comes off of you this game and last, which didn’t end well for me.

I’m not all-in on a DC lynch. Still plenty of time for reconsideration about that. My intention for tomorrow’s edition of Hooker’s Morning Review (not to be mistaken for Morning After Review of Hookers - that’s something else entirely) is commentary on each poster. Or at least summarizing my thoughts on them to get it out in the open.

Ah. I thought you were saying I’m pretty pleasant when going around accusing people. My bad!
