We just added a network card to use the ethernet. Whenever I try to install the CD-ROM for the ethernet, the computer tells me that they cannot find the file of the program and something about a lack of pathways. What’s going on? I’ve installed many software and never had this problem.
It’s not real clear what difficulty you’re having since you don’t install “ethernet” as its simply an interface for hooking up a modem, internal network or whatever. Also what operating system are you using and why isn’t plug and play picking up the new hardware?
The network card came with a CD-ROM.
I have a Compaq Presario 5360 w/ Windows98.
Are you saying Windows cannot automatically find the drivers, or you are unable to manully navigate the CD to locate the drivers?
Another item I would be concerned with, based on your post, is whether or not the card is properly installed in its slot. Also are the proper cables to/from the card in place?
Both. Usually whenever I pop a CD in my computer it autmatically plays, but with this one it didn’t play. So I went tu “run” and tried to manually open up the CD and that’s when I was told that my computer couldn’t find the file.
I believe so. I clicked “find” and it found the ethernet. So I assume that the ethernet hardware is installed properly.
Normally with Win98 if it finds new hardware it will try to find drivers for it within its own cache of drivers. I suspect that the card may be fairly new and Win98 doesn’t have a default driver so it would want the user to provide the driver and will ask the User for where the file (driver) can be found. The point is you should have a dialog box asking to point to the file (the fact that the CD doesn’t autoload isn’t a big issue and in fact auto-run isn’t needed since all the CD probably does is furnish drivers). When asked where the drivers can be found just navigate Win98 to your CD drive.
You can also go to Control Panel and click on Network and see if the card is recognized by the system. If so the drivers are already installed and you can move on to the next step of setting up whatever you are using the card for. If not, then retry the Install New Hardware under Control Panel.
Not necessarily. You can properly install the hardware, have yet to install the drivers, and the O/S will “know” hardware has been installed. The device list will just show something has been installed and that’s it.
Waterman’s comment about the card not being properly seated is good. I would also suggest you attempt to view the contents of the CD in Windows Explorer. You may have a faulty CD and that prevents the O/S from locating the driver, as well as a maual search.
