Coincidentally, ex-Angel Mo Vaughn looks to be at the end of his career. As a Mets fan, I liked a lot of deals the Mets made that later blew up in their face (e.g., Alomar, Burnitz, Cedeno), but Appier for Vaughn was one deal that I did not like at all. Still, I rooted for Vaughn and hoped he would prove my skepticism wrong.
Coincidentally, when the Mets were wheelin’ and dealin’ during the '01-'02 offseason, many Mets fans wanted to see a Percival/Benitez deal a la the Franco/Myers deal the Mets made back in the '89-'90 offseason.
Making things even worse for Mets fans is that former Mets reliever Tug “Ya Gotta Believe!” McGraw has a malignant brain tumor
Mo-agree-boy he hated Cal-hurt in 1st inning of 1st game! I have liked the Mets since 1962. I remember when Casey was asked why he chose Hobie Landrith as 1st pick. “Without a catcher you get a lot of passed balls.” Valentine sure looks happy to be on ESPN. Phillips, because of the trades,(what’s up w/Cedeno-can’t catch a flyball), is out soon too ,in IMO.
Pretty much everyone in NY agrees that Phillips is out soon, too. And you know what else? Valentine was pretty reviled, especially at the end - but now people are saying “hmm, maybe he wasn’t so bad.” At the very least, it appears he wasn’t the problem. I’m a Braves fan, so I don’t want the Mets to win, but this is just awful. Nobody deserves this kind of stuff. Especially the McGraw thing, obviously. Very sad.
If Percival is done, same deal - I’ve never pulled for his team, but I’m sorry to hear it. You don’t wish that kind of thing on anybody.
Phillips may be gone by Monday if we don’t win this series against the Braves. Glavine vs. Maddux tonight at Shea. A great night for a ball game (one of the first this year).
Trade Alomar. Keep Burnitz (good arm/speed and starting to hit again @ .311). Keep Trachsel. Trade Benitez.
I can’t wait until 2004/5 when Arron Heilman, Scott Kazmir, Jose Reyes and Jason Huber are on the opening day roster. Finally a good minor league system that they are holding on to. It’s been a while.
Where have I heard this before? Ah yes, now I remember…
“I can’t wait until 1996 when Paul Wilson, Bill Pulsipher and Jason Isringhausen are in the pitching rotation. Finally a good minor league system that they are holding on to…”
Cedeno? Pardon me, but Cedeno? How could anyone like a deal for a guy who has one great attribute (speed) that is greatly reduced by horrible (and declining) plate discipline, lack of power, and horrific defense.
The other moves seem to have been poorly timed with players hitting production walls, but Cedeno has essentially parlayed 2 decent seasons out of 8 into a decent contract.
Cedeno hit .313 and stole 66 bases for the Mets in '99. He missed half a season in Houston in '00 due to an injury, but his numbers for the half season were pretty good, at .283 and 25. He was healthy for Detroit in 2001 and hit .293 with 55 stolen bases. The 2001 Mets were a station-to-station team with no speed, and ended countless innings by hitting into double plays.
The Mets signed Cedeno at an average of $4.5M a year (relatively cheap considering the other salaries on the team) to provide speed at the top of the lineup and hit about .290 while doing it. If Cedeno, Alomar, and Burnitz had played as expected and not had season-long slumps, the team’s 2002 offense would have been much better.
Vaughn, on the other hand, was heavy, in his mid-30s, and hadn’t played in all of 2001. Giving up one of the Mets’ most consistent pitchers in 2001 for him was a stupid move, especially considering Vaughn’s bloated long-term contract and Piazza’s expected eventual shift to first base.
Cedeno was never a good fielder and I wasn’t expecting him to suddenly improve. I also wasn’t expecting the Mets to think they could put him in centerfield. Now that was a stupid move.
Heard about Cone’s retirement. How many old ladies in Brooklyn said,“Too bad, another Jewish boy is out of work.” I recall years ago how many thought (hoped) it was spelled Cohen. BTW, as I post this I am watching Dodger game. Scully is definitely the only announcer who could get away w/ naming all 12 Jewish players.( He did last year) Let’s see:Green, Schoenweiss, Marquis, Kapler, Ausmus, Eckstein?, need help for rest. Thanks. No big deal, just curious.
Thanks. Yeah, wasn’t sure about Eck. & I see Percy will try to alter his delivery. Can he successfully do that, the way he pushes off? Now Dreifort has big knee problems because of his altered delivery, on top of prior knee surgeries.
