Whilst I recognize that the trading deadling is 1 p.m. tomorrow (est?) the gms have been strangely quiet. Particularly Cashman. What do you think we’ll see today? Beane will get an outfielder, maybe Giles, Cashman will get a pitcher, or fired.
The Yanks have made several trades recently. They sent Mondesi and Miceli packing in just the last week alone. They also acquired Benitez from the Mets and got Jesse Orosco from the Padres in the last week.
Cashman has been anything but quiet.

Speaking of which…what poetic justice it was to see Benitez blow the game on Saturday against Boston. All I kept hearing from some of my bandwagon yankee fan friends is how well he was doing. Now they know the pain I’ve been feeling the past few years. Keep it up Armando.
It will be interesting to see how Torre will use him (or not) later in the season.
By my count that makes 8 former Mets currently on that damn yankee team. Torre, Benitez, Orosco, Zeile, Ventura, Stottlemeyer, Mazilli and Zimmer. Am I missing anyone?
Its like watching former girlfriends date your nemesis.
Mets in 2005!!
**
Well, since you’re including coaches, you forgot Willie Randolph.
Giving up on 2004 already? Smart guy…

One thing the Mets do have going for them is the catcher’s position. The young ones are Vance Wilson and Jason Phillips. That’s right: the Wilson-Phillips platoon.
Why would Cashman get fired?
It’s apparently rumored that the Yanks want another right-fielder, since Dellucci isn’t really a starter. And I think everybody in the league wants bullpen help.
They really want Vlad.
But they’re not going to get him.
Oh, and they may want a starting pitcher whose name isn’t Weaver.
Zev Willie doesn’t count. He had was poisoned with Steinbrenner blood before he wore a Mets uniform. Yeah I am look ing forward to next years motto. Mets Magic, Catch it!!..(next year)
Marley, I think zuma was only kidding. But given Steinbrenner’s history you never know if you are safe or not.
Hey who wouldn’t want Vlad. Is he staying put or is he on the Market? I think it would suck if Montreal (or wherever they are next year) keeps him and he bolts after the season is over. From what I heard a few months ago he wants to stay out of the limelight (like a NY or LA). Also that his mom is the biggest contributor in his decision making process.
That, of course, is true. There’s not another owner in baseball who’d even think of firing Joe Torre, who’s won (I think) seven pennants in a row, four World Series titles, and is so popular in this town.
That’s the dilemma the Expos have been in so many times in recent years. It really sucks.
What a coincidence. . .here in StL we’ve got an extremely talented outfielder who’d probably love to go to the Yankees, just hope he doesn’t twist his ankle getting off the plane (or walking to the car, or going up the dugout steps. . .)
The Yankees could live with Delucci if need be. He’s a huge upgrade on Raul Mondesi, but then, who wouldn’t be?
A huge upgrade? I’m not sure I agree there… Mondesi got traded for a bag o’ balls and a player who has spent most of the last 3 seasons platooned.
Dellucci is a career .270 hitter with no power and no arm. Mondesi is not the player he once was, but he was the only outfielder the Yankees had who had a halfway respectable arm, and he was tearing it up pretty good offensively at the start of the season.
Reports are that Torre demanded that Cashman get rid of Mondesi after he skated out of Fenway the other night after being pinch-hit for. There was another incident in Cleveland where Mondesi earned the anger of Torre. I wouldn’t see this deal as anything but a Red Sox/Carl Everett style “get him outta my face” trade.
It’s interesting what has happened to the Yanks ability to make deals. First the Pirates reject the Yanks offer for Sauerbeck, then deal him to the Red Sox, getting Brandon Lyon, who cost the Sox next to nothing at the start of the season, and a good prospect in Anastacio Martinez.
Then the Reds blew off Cashman and traded Scott Williamson for some lesser prospects and about 1.5 million in cash to the Red Sox. Cashman gave some sour grapes statement about how the Reds offered Williamson for Brandon Claussen and $2 million and he wasn’t going to go for that, but who really knows?
Word has it that there’s a big powwow today where all the Yankee brass from the Tampa and NY offices are coming to NY to meet with Darth 'Brenner. I’d love to be a fly on the wall there… Anyone remember the movie version of “The Untouchables”? The dinner party?

I’m just happy to report that the Angels just traded a decent left-handed reliever and all they got were some deep minor league pitching. In other words, no one that will help in the next three years.
YOU SUCK STONEMAN! I hate you.
Minor nitpick: The Yankees won four pennants in a row (1998-2001). They also won a pennant in 1996 and were the AL East champions in 2002. They were also the wild card team in 1997 [and in 1995, under Buck Showalter]. So, while the Yankees have been to the playoffs for the last eight consecutive years (seven under Torre), they did not win seven pennants.

Check your count. Mel Stottlemeyer was a career Yankee (1964 - 1974) before crossing over to the dark side as a mets coach. Fortunately, he saw the light and returned home.
Neurotik Shoney has stunk for a couple of years, that was why he was in the bullpin. His attitude was so poor there was no way he could be successful in red. It looks like we made out ok. It was pretty much straight up trade, no horse trading. I wish Shoney well with his new team.
What DOES bother me is the rumors of Stoneman trading some of our read talent away. One of the names mentioned is Donnelly. If he does that I will have a very hard time not writing that obscene laced letter I have composed in my mind for just such an occasion.

For those non-Cardinal fans, troub must be referring to the Cardinals’ Young Mantle. He’d have to give up his #7 if he goes to the Yanks, but a Drew-for-starting pitching trade would be perfect since both players would only be on the field every 5th day.
Ah. Sorry Zev. I said ‘pennant’ when I meant ‘division title.’ They’ve won the division for the five years running, I see.
But either way, I think you’ll agree that he’s had about as good a tenure as a manager can have, and it’s hard to imagine rumors about his job being in trouble anyplace else.
Well, he just released Appier and has no one to replace him. The schmuck.
And I don’t have a problem with Schoeneweis being traded, I didn’t want him on the team. But with both the Yankees and Red Sox in full on bullpen building mode, I think we might have been able to get something better from one of them, especially if we threw in a minor leaguer.
If he trades away Donnelly, then he had better get something extremely good for him. But make no mistake. The Angels are now in rebuilding mode one season after winning the World Series.
I was at last nites game and must say that I should not be surprised by this move. Ape has not pitched well all season and actually he lost it towards the end of last year. Both Scioscia and Stoneman have given him gobs of chances. I personally like Ape and appreciate the fact that he is a gamer, so I am sorry to see him go.
But what should get your goat about releasing Ape is the fact that just yesterday Stoneman released Mickey Callaway. Mickey, as far as I can see, is just going thru the traditional sophomore slump. So for this move, I will agree that he is a schmuck.
I would never make a trade with the Yankees. In the minor leagues they have B level players at best. Baseball Perspectus ranked their minor league system towards the bottom. So that only leaves their major leaguers and I don’t see any of them that I would want since most of them are overpriced and over-rated. I read today that Chicago is going to give Shoney the opportunity to be a starter next year, so it was a good fit.
We just never got it going this year. The boys have not played up to their potential.
Plus, I think they rushed Sele too soon back into the rotation–look at Gil Meche of Seattle, they had him pitch in AAA ball last year and he is now one of the best pitcher this year.
Glaus looked good for 1 month this season, but he is battling a multiple set of injuries.
Washburn, I don’t know what is wrong with him, and have not heard whether it is physical or mental. But he is not the ace of the staff any more.
The ace of the staff has shifted to Ortiz and you know that sometimes Ortiz just has to have a bad game. But he has looked good this year.
The only position players who have been great this year are GA and Benjie Molina. Molina is definitely an underrated player. I watched him throw out 3 Yankees last nite. He made them look bad. (plus Benjie has the most beautiful smile I have ever seen) GA, what with what he did at the Allstar game is finally getting the attention he deserves.
The bullpen is the bright spot on the team, hopefully Stoneman doesn’t **** it up.
