Season 2 can’t be as good, almost by definition, but I did find myself enjoying the first episode. Part of that is that I like watching Collin Farrell, and have done since In Bruges. Plus his crazy cop scene with the dad makes McNulty look like a junior cadet.
Am looking forward to what people think after tonight’s episode.
I was flushed with the sense of the first episode’s being contrived and with something being awry with the light or the time of day. Hoping hoping that someone something equals Matthew McConaughey’s passion and thoughtfulness.
I was going to watch it, but that HBO channel was just a black screen for me. I later realized it was good on the Spanish language channel and the standard def channels, but I’d already missed a bunch of the ep. Anyone else have that problem?
So Taylor Kitsch’s character’s secret is that he’s gay, right?
I’m curious to see what happens next in regards to Colin Farrell’s character, but the whole main plot line about the political land dealings really holds no interest to me. Last season the whole creepy, satanic, backwoods serial killer angle was intriguing, but this season, corrupt politicians and financial land deals? Snore.
Watching this episode felt like a chore. I feel like there might be a story in this mess somewhere, but I’m struggling to find it. I certainly don’t get the impression that the story is worth using 10 episodes to tell.
Some of the expository dialogue this season is absolutely awful. That entire opening scene with Vince in bed was just cringe-worthy.
“Dark underbelly of ,” really only works if it’s set in a place that is otherwise big and glamorous on the surface.
Vinci is a tiny accident-of-history industrial jurisdiction with a residential population of 95. There’s hardly a over-belly. How can there be much of an interesting underbelly?
I’ve read that the main storyline is based, in part, on the history of Vernon, California. The town has a population of 112 and had a history of corruption about a hundred years ago surrounding the railroads.
And, BTW, someone upthread thought that four main characters was too many. Well this episode addressed that issue.
I assume this plot point to be modeled after stuff like Chinatownwhere Cross wants to control the water supply and thus the future and L.A. Confidentialwhere Patchett uses blackmail on politicians to get a freeway project approved. It could work done right; only it’s boring. The show suffers the same problem as last year, namely the writing; with the added problem of having too many characters around. And only Father Of The Year Ray Velcro comes close to being compeling.
I do find it funny though that so far every episode we get a new ginger to be a possibility for being the real rapist of Ray’s ex-wife and bio-dad of his son. Last episode we had Vaughn’s right hand man, this time it’s one of his goons who beat that guy up under the bridge.
Taylor Kitsch’s character is a biker. Of course he’s a closet case.
So the most interesting character gets killed off at the end of the second episode. At least his murderer was interesting; a guy wearing a bird head.
Is it possible that he’ll just end up in the hospital fighting for his life, rather than dead? He wasn’t in any of the “next week on…” scenes but of course they wouldn’t show him.
