I don’t know if Broadway songs count, but The Scarlet Pimpernel, which was really a good show, had a number of lyrics that, while not exactly BAD, really showed a rookie lyricist pushing a little too hard.
To wit:
“I can never be duped by that scurrilous phantom again.” Scurrilous? Couldn’t she have thought of something a little more common? Or was she more concerned with showing off her vocabulary?
“God, when did man lose his reason? Save us, my God, if you’re there! God, can you not feel the terror, like a fire in the air?” Okay, I think you’ve invoked the Almighty enough there.
Those are all I can think of offhand.
However, I would like to add Morning Train by Sheena Easton. We used to make fun of it by reading the chorus as though we were doing a poetry reading.
