Trump and US Capitol Riot

Too little, too late.

How long until he walks this back?

I think there will be a mix.

John Kelly said this:

Which reads like he may have learned a lesson.

Some have been saying that the Trump since losing the election, or even just since yesterday, is different and worse, and not who they signed on with – which is, at best, a kind of hairsplitting, or burying one’s head in the sand. If your eyes were open, you saw that Trump all along.

And others will go with the “Covid 19 ruined everything” narrative.

Of course he does. He’s made so much off the rubes and funneled money through legitimate government channels. His term was a successful business enterprise for him and his family.
So what if he’s managed to leave ashes in his wake, isn’t that the outcome of most his business deals?

Yeah, this is one key difference between Trump and Nixon. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Nixon never had as many rabid, insanely devoted fans, and certainly not at the time of his resignation.

I do think he’s America’s worst President. But the scary thing isn’t how bad a President he is and has been; it’s the number of Americans who idolize him. And the extent to which his party has enabled his badness.

He’s done. He is a loser. One does not idolize losers. They will find someone else to follow. Trump will be a pariah.

Did anyone else notice that Trump’s words today all but admitted that there was no fraud? That everything he’s been spouting for two months now was all nonsense?

We’ll see. Like you say, how many more revelations come out will be a factor. But I tend to feel that the Republican mainstream will prefer to spin a narrative that doesn’t point to their own negligence.

Really? Because I had the exact opposite impression. He talked about the need to reform election laws and the nobility of his lawsuits. It seemed to me that he was implying that his claims about the election being fraudulent are still true.

Some of his folks on Parler seem to be figuring things out, albeit slowly.

When I first saw that, it smacked of so much introspection that I figured it just had to be PsyOps of some sort – that they’d been infiltrated by some liberal org or another.

Do you think this cohort is epiphany-enabled ?

My impression as well.

I will take your word for it, both of you. I didn’t watch/listen to the video (I don’t want to hear his stupid voice right now) so I was just going by excerpts in printed articles. Thanks for your more informed perspective.

Here’s what he said about the election:

We have just been through an intense election and emotions are high. But now tempers must be cooled and calm restored. We must get on with the business of America. My campaign vigorously pursued every legal avenue to contest the elections results. My only goal was to ensure the integrity of the vote. In so doing, I was fighting to defend American democracy. I continue to strongly believe that we must reform our election laws to verify the identity and eligibility of all voters and to ensure faith and confidence in all future elections. Now Congress has certified the results. A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly, and seamless transition of power. This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.

The take away I got from this is that Trump is saying the Democrats stole the election with lots of illegal voters. Trump tried to fight that. But he failed (because Congress wouldn’t back him up) and the Democrats won this time.

There are a lot more. Nixon was well trained for the job, unlike Trump. Nixon was a screaming socialist compared to Republicans today. Nixon had major psychological problems. The sick thing is that he would have won the 1972 election just fine without Watergate.
Also, Nixon did have some inkling that he was in the wrong, unlike Trump.

Nixon’s achievements were to get out of Vietnam and into China. Harding did not really have time to do much either way, and I would not rate him as disastrous. Buchanan was just inert. I know he is blamed for starting the War Between the States (or whatever you wish to call it), but what would have happened with a stronger president instead of him? The issue was going to come to a head anyway.

Trump has managed to be both inert and destructive, which is no mean achievement, and about the only one of his entire presidency. And we will always remember him for his unfailing sense of how to screw up up;diplomacy and representational meetings.

Back to the topic. Given that Trump appears to have incited the riots, and did nothing to stop them while whining nonstop about “fake ballots” that are indeed fake, methinks that Our Donald needs to be sidelined immediately and legally, and matters placed in the slightly shaky but ever so much more reliable hands of Mike Pence until the official handover.

I agree with almost all these differences Voyager lists between Nixon and trump, with one glaring disagreement (hint:difference #3).

Nixon, in spite of his shortcomings, at least lived in the same universe as everyone else. Trump has invented his own universe of non-facts, and populated it with millions of gullible Americans.

Nixon could have ended the Vietnam War six years before he did. Not sure how many thousands of lives that cost.

One does if one believes in him as a martyr, whose glorious reign, i mean administration, was done in by all the hidden forces and other BS that those people believe in.

I don’t have a strong opinion either way, but I believe there will be a not-small core of fanatics who won’t let go of Trump. And what of the someone else? That person might be even worse – more clever and subtle, not so openly an asshole. We had the devil we knew and he is out of power; who will be the devil we don’t know?

When I saw the video of Trump’s “concession” speech, my first reaction was, “I didn’t realize how good animation has become. This almost looks like Trump.” My second reaction was, “Why don’t they show the guy holding the gun to his head.”

Why is this thread in MPSIMS? It clearly belongs in P&E and I am about to move it.
