And as for “bullseye” comments, I believe that was first introduced as legitimate political discourse back in the Sarah Palin era, when she put out a poster with Gabbie Giffords’ face in a bullseye. Gabbie, as you’ll remember, ended up getting shot in the head by a disturbed individual.
That picture does look way too much like the Iwo Jima one to be a coincidence.
If that’s where the shooter was, that doesn’t excuse the failure of security; the Secret Service should ensure any rooftop with a line of fire to the stage is clear of threats. That’s just plain common sense even a layperson like me can understand. High-powered rifle shots can travel really, really far.
ETA: Hell, any building with windows affording a sniper post should be secured before the rally. Texas Book Depository ring any bells?

They also can’t order their protectee. They can counsel that it’s not possible to fully protect them in a certain area but they can’t make him not go.
Seems to me this is a golden opportunity to show up the failure of Trump’s gun policy. It’s so easy to get a gun that even his own rallies aren’t safe! If good guys with guns can’t stop a psycho from nearly putting a bullet in a president, how safe are you?
Only Republicans can do that with impunity, unfortunately. Democrats who try will be widely criticized without any care for hypocrisy.
He never had a gun policy. In fact, trump banned more guns than Obama and Biden together. trump was very happy to get the support of the NRA of course.
At least the “Biden should drop out” headlines will be gone.
I didn’t draw that comparison. But to clarify, I do not see Biden’s debate performance as the existential problem. It’s concerning, but manageable. The existential problem is the Democrats’ uselessness in coming together to manage it. A major intra-party split like this, so close to the election, doesn’t bode well for whatever other surprises may come down the pipeline.

That’s easy to say but very hard to do. Candidates generally like and want to be in front of audiences and meet people for obvious reasons. It’s hard to reconcile that desire and security.

Three law enforcement sources confirm the shooter was outside the venue at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.
Two of those sources say the shooter was on a roof, outside of the venue. Multiple law enforcement sources have referred to this individual as a sniper, although additional details about that are not clear.
