Trump claims Canadians want to be the 51 US state. Canadian dopers any thoughts?

The United States only has 10 active Army divisions. We dont have the manpower to invade Canada.

Nor the will.

We’re talking fascists. The “invasion” could very well consist of ICBMs to kill most of the population, and flights of drones to hunt down the survivors.

That’s not going to happen.

It’s bad enough that Trump is returning to this tired subject yet again. I don’t take it seriously, but it is as tiresome as any boss repeatedly telling a bad joke.

The worst part? Trump is probably thinking about this since he believes taking over all of North America would give him five bonus armies a turn. And it is unlikely he can take over Yakutsk, Kamchatka or Australia. Maybe Ukraine, which is huge on the map he is looking at.

And I think it probably will. We are in the equivalent of the run-up to WWII, except in this version the fascists have a more powerful military than everyone else and nuclear weapons. And Hitler wouldn’t have hesitated to kill billions with such weapons.

As you said eight years ago.

It’s not going to happen. Trump is too much of a chickenshit to start a war where the enemy can hit him back and he knows that dead Americans coming home in coffins will make him look bad. Any attempt by him to launch nuclear weapons would promptly result in the end of his presidency, and possibly also his life at the same time.

That wonderful news, and a cause for celebration. Canadians aren’t buying it. BIG TIME. I hope that there Danish-Greenland reactions are similar.

I like the way your mind works. My sense is that most Canadians are like you as regards your proximity to and relationship with the United States.

Damned if I know. I’ve already heard a few acquaintances say—for now—that it’s time to stock up on ammunition. They’re joking, but knowing a few of them as I do, maybe they’re not.

And if the FLQ terrorist group could make and explode IEDs in 1970 Quebec, then there’s no reason Canadians cannot today. Just like the Iraquis and Afghanis.

I don’t like thinking about such things, but handgun, rifle, and shotgun ammunition is easily available at places like Canadian Tire and Walmart. Chemicals (sulphur, saltpeter, etc.) for simple gunpowder can be obtained at drugstores; carbon can come from coal or charcoal, ANFO is just fertilizer until it isn’t, detonators can be obtained if you know a guy who knows a guy, and so on.

It has the potential to get real ugly real fast, if the people I’ve been talking with are serious.

Could you placate trump by letting him have Alyeska.
Tell him that’s a big win.

Even fascist dictatorships need to motivate their military and population to fight a war. It took Hitler six years to prepare the German public to fight a war against nations that had killed millions of them just 20 years before. How easy will it be for Trump to get America frothing in the teeth against Canada?

Just have Fox News drone endlessly on every program that Canada is ‘woke’ and flooding our border with trans Antifa teachers trying to push Critical Race Theory and Common Core math on America’s youth, and his supporters will be chomping at the bit for invasion within six weeks.

People in general are really stupid and pliable, and MAGA people are drawn from the lower half of that group.

Stranger

But if I bluster and pretend that’s a real threat, I can show everyone I’m more patriotic than the love child of Laura Secord and Captain Canuck!

Maybe a merger would make the US go metric?

Afghanistan is famously impossible to conquer.

Canada? No one knows. When the U.S. last tried, Canada ‘s military defense was taken care of by Britain. This time, Britain would be too focused on Putin’s attempt to dominate Europe to give more than symbolic military help.

Trump thinks that Canadians only care about their economic well-being and would not fight back. Want to convince him otherwise? Institute conscription. That’s what the Taliban would do.

Two points:

One, U.S. absorption, or colonialization, of Canada would only happen in the context of an American response to Russian domination of Europe. No one knows if that will happen, or when. I just cannot rule it out.

Two, historical background here is the myth of the Canadian militia:

Abstract on myth that everyday Canadians defeated the American invaders

Canada should build a wall. To keep out the foreign devils, rapists, and criminals who are flooding across the southern border. And the US will pay for it.

It’s not going to happen but… what a ridiculious comment, man.

Let’s suppose the USA invaded Canada. Canada’s armed forces wouldn’t stand a chance, they’d be swept away in days. We don’t have the numbers or gear but most importantly, the Canadian Forces is not deployed, designed, or prepared in any way to defend Canada from an invasion from the south. There is zero preparation in place for something like that. They wouldn’t last a week before the country fell.

So suppose there was subsequently a resistance, like there was in Afghanistan. Which there would be, albeit one of a different sort. Does that really make anyone feel better? Does it strike anyone as a good outcome that Canada is under military occupation while a violent underground campaign of violence on both sides of the border rages along and there’s military reprisals for years on end, poverty, violence and hatred spreading?

I don’t like that either.

Canada should build a wall. But it will be about four feet high, topped with plexiglass, and contain small rooms for rule breakers. To get out, you have to lift the handle while wearing hockey gloves.

Yet to mosey by Danielle Smith’s Alberta as of late?

Clinton won the popular vote by almost 3 million in 2016. Blame the EC for that election’s result.

Yeah, we’d get out-nuked faster than you can say Thurl Ravenscroft. Not even “might” qualifies here.

Just remember that an armed society is a polite society. Canadians might finally become known for being polite rather than the current “rude hot-head” reputation.
