Trump convicted! At least in the minds of the L&O:SVU writers

I think he’s referring to the nightly news.

You mean the FAKE NEWS?

#TrumpPoutyFace

They did an episode a few seasons back that was clearly “inspired” by John Edwards. The OP, who has acknowledged that he’s not a frequent viewer, probably missed that one.

[Moderating]

We’ve had a number of reports about this thread. It’s borderline, but I think we can have a meaningful discussion here about the politics of Law and Order and its habit of basing episodes on current headlines. If, however, anyone wants to hash it out with another poster about their own politics, you should open a separate thread in the Pit.

Sometimes, a rich prick suspect character is just a rich prick suspect character. It’s not as if Real-Life NYC has a scarcity of “rich prick” types that are loathed by other segments of the community (although it has been commented, that in the decades since the Law & Order franchise debuted actual crime in NYC has gone down so much that not even “ripped from the headlines” is enough to keep up new plots).

SVU does tend to go back to this well(*) too frequently, either as the main plot, or as one of the red herrings.

IIRC, in L&O Classic, it was not unknown for the case to fall apart so the “everyone knows it was him” suspect would walk, even some of those at the DA admitting they just could not make the standard for nailing him and oh, well, that’s the breaks, or even - egads! - that he got vindicated. SVU seems to me rather more like, not so much liberals or feminists or leftists, but “crime does not pay” scolds about doinkdoink****JUSTICE!!!**doinkdoink – a lot more into finding a way that eventually *someone gets what’s coming to them, often to the  point. (Of course, AFTER some molesting/raping/torture/general assholery has been used to establish they deserve it. And maybe he got away in their original episode but then in the sequel episode we take him down good and hard.)
(
) Besides the entitled prick suspect, hey also do tend to go back to one of the LEO characters guilt-tripping or badgering a victim or key witness who just wants to move on with his/her life as to how he/she just MUST help.

There was the movie “White House Down” which was literally their Presidential stand-in for Obama (played by Jamie Fox) gunning down racist right wing white supremacist terrorists paid for by the military-industrial complex who invade the White House, except the action was mediocre, had enough plot holes to fit several battleships through, and the concept was done in general way better by the earlier released film “Olympus Has Fallen”.

Funny how “rich a-hole rapist” equals trump seems to be a calculus occurring only in the minds of trump supporters.

Anyway, I’ve cited an episode based on Edwards, so it becomes clear that the L+O:SVU folks aren’t guilty so much of partisanship as the extreme laziness of letting the headlines write their stories. Can anybody else cite episodes based on other politicians and see if we can get a total of D vs. R?

Are we counting only state- or national-level pols? I gather a number of episodes are based loosely on dirty politics in and around New York City specifically.

Would “Pride” from the 5th season of L&O count? It’s supposedly based on the murder of Harvey Milk, though the connection looks pretty superficial to me.
