I think it’s also advantageous because it gets the events of January 6th back to the top of the news cycle.
And it’s the right thing to do, historically. Yeah, the Republicans are going to scream…unfair…witch hunt…hoax…at the top of their lungs, but they are always going to do that no matter what Democrats do. It’s important that they not let the massive continuous gaslighting modify their behavior.
That’s the same as negotiating with the terrorists. I just don’t see it as being bad for Democrats, except in the sense that right wing media will find a “this looks bad for Democrats” angle to everything.
The Democrats won, and they need to keep acting like it. They owe it to the 81 million voters that put them into office.
Democrats getting the term “January Exception” out there in full force. I want to hear one Republican give an answer to the question of whether Biden gets one free coup as long as he does it after losing an election in his last few weeks in office.
Setting an example of upholding the rule of law and exposing corruption and wrongdoing in government is a hugely important task. It’s all the more important if one of the major political parties has basically given up on those responsibilities.
Consider the comparatively few but crucial Republicans who obeyed the law and told the truth about 2020 election results, despite being dishonestly reviled and attacked by their fellow Republicans, because they knew it was the right thing to do. We can’t just throw those people under the bus by sacrificing all considerations of public duty to short-term political advantage.
And I think that in terms of long-term political advantage, principle pays off. When Democrats were pushing for the investigation of the Watergate scandal, a lot of Republicans (not least Nixon himself) complained loud and long that it was merely a “partisan witch hunt”. That did not add to the luster of the GOP’s reputation in the long run.
Yep. There’s the infamous deplorables, right there chanting Trump’s name and stating they are acting on orders from Donald Trump “who is still our president”.
It really summarizes the Dotard’s lifestyle. Those morons on video represent all Trump’s contractors, real estate agents, doctors, etc. No class whatsoever.
I’m missing something, wasn’t there an early vote were the senate voted to dismiss the trial? The Trump supporters failed, all Democrats and a few Republican senators did vote to continue yes, so then why are they discussing today why this trial should go ahead?
Could it be because Democrats actually believe that their role is to serve the public, rather than score points for their party? Your statement is very telling.
What I read is that she didn’t like the optics of presiding over the trial. Very likely, the VP usually yields to the Pro-tem on impeachment trials, but then the VP usually doesn’t preside until their vote is crucial. In any case this is kind of unprecedented. Usually, the chief just presides when a president in tried, but Trump is no longer president. I guess they can make up the rules on the spot. But I think if Harris decided to preside, there would be no way to stop her.
Janie Raskin is killing it. It’s too bad both Maryland Senators are Democrats, it would be hard for him to move into the Senate. Larry Hogan’s a Reoublican, Raskin could run for Governor, if that were his wont.
