Trump indicted

No, Watt is on first. Who is on second.

I read one of those tell all books by someone that had worked closely with Melania* and the story……and confusion….around that coat was really funny.

Melania sees herself as a model and fashion icon. She has a whole team of people in charge of procuring and co-ordinating her outfits. She has things called “look books”, which are picture books of sketches showing her how to put everything together, which shoes and accessories go with each item. And there is a team of assistants in charge of procuring her clothes…much of this involves convincing them to give her expensive stuff for free.

The point is that Melania doesn’t just get up in the morning and throw on clothes, and she doesn’t order her clothes herself off the internet, especially “fast fashion” items.

Except for that one time. Her “fashion team” was completely taken aback when she showed up in that “fast fashion” Zara jacket. No one had ever seen it, it wasn’t among the clothes they had catalogued, it wasn’t in her “look books”. No one even knew how she had gotten her hands on it. Apparently she ordered it herself online, which is NOT something Melania Trump does. Except that one time.

*I read several such books and I don’t remember which one discussed the coat. Stephanie Grisham, maybe.

Cohen pled guilty to federal charges, including tax evasion. More serious charges and different sentencing guidelines, basically.

The scene at the Manhattan criminal courthouse this morning:

He’s hoodwinked a lot of folks on the board. Bet you won’t soon forget his name now.

If the cite is from the New Yorker and it seems a leeetle over the top, best to check.

He can talk. He can talk.

Borowitz is good. And funny. Just don’t take him seriously.

He will talk. He will talk.

i saw this last night. it is dizzying. i believe that blanche’s law firm did not want their name associated with trump, causing him to leave the firm while he deals with this case.

i would be surprized if the judge doesn’t have some sort of “gag” order imposed today.

It’d have to be a ball gag order for it to work.

To be fair, Melania digging up that jacket and wearing it again didn’t seem remotely over the top. In fact, it seemed entirely on brand.

There’s a time and a place for subtlety, and that time was before Scary Movie.

I don’t expect a formal order today, although there may be one. This judge will attempt to balance the competing interests of free speech against Trump’s efforts to taint the jury pool with his rhetoric. I imagine he will caution Trump today against making statements that might result in a formal gag order.

If Trump disobeys (what are the odds?), he’ll be summoned back to court for the judge to make the order a condition of his (Trump’s) own recognizance release – which I also expect today. My understanding is that New York no longer requires bail for non-violent felony charges.

Whatever happens today, it’s going to be interesting.

What happens when he completely ignores the judge’s caution and the subsequent gag orders? Is there a point at which the judge will just toss him in jail until trial? How much rope is he likely to be given?

We’ve driven by out of curiosity. It’s not an area we usually would visit. You can’t see all that much from the road.

If you want a really nice home style Creole dinner, stop by Yvette’s. Usually mostly locals dining there. Very nice family owns and operates the tiny restaurant. Their Conch Yvette is one of my favorite appetizers in the world.

Would it be too much to ask to have a punch-up in the courtroom today between Trump’s lawyers?

It’s only a guess, but I expect it’ll be more than we’d like to see. Enough to clearly demonstrate that a formal gag order is the only reasonable option. Judges don’t like to inhibit people’s free speech rights unless absolutely necessary.

ETA: I’d love to be completely wrong on this point today.

Oh goodie! Let him run his mouth and get himself a gag order, or even more charges. There is a reason that lawyers will tell their clients to shut up. Not possible with Trump though.

With no cameras.
dammit

i’m thinking more alone the lines of not inciting violence against the court and personnel.

As former ‘personnel,’ I’m not adverse to that.

But really, we always have enough protection.

The judge’s primary task in controlling Trump’s (and anyone else’s) speech is to protect the integrity of a trial for both parties. That means protecting the jury pool.

It also means recognizing that Trump has a unique bullhorn due to his years as a sitting president. Few other people in this country would have the ability to taint a jury pool as Trump can.

This judge knows these factors and will do a good job, I think.

And what happens when a gag order is issued and he ignores it? (Can you tell, I’m really waiting for the part where he gets fitted for an orange jumpsuit!)
