Trump, potential incarceration, and Secret Service protection

Agreed. Once he’s isolated in prison, trump becomes the easiest politician to protect. He doesn’t travel and he doesn’t interact with the public.

The judge should tell him that because of all the threats he faces, he is putting Trump in “protective custody” for a couple of years.

120 prisoners a year are killed by other prisoners. They dont even count the number of beatdowns. A prison is a very dangerous place to be.

Sure, but no other prisoners have a large contingent of Secret Service agents around them 24/7 for their defense. And with a prison, it would be easier to keep weapons out, whereas the president can theoretically be in a sniper’s scope any time he is out and about in public, i.e., John F. Kennedy in Dallas.

And 21,570 homicides in the U.S. last year, total.
120 within prison walls.
21,450 outside prison walls.

For the full picture, you need to also consider that there are a lot more people outside of prison than inside. At any given moment, about 0.7% of the population is behind bars. Which means that you’re actually 25% more likely to be killed outside of prison than inside.

Though, that’s comparing to the population as a whole. Presidents are at much greater risk than ordinary citizens, with 9% of them having been assassinated. Trump would be far safer in a prison than he would be out and about.

Hence why I used the word isolated.

Sure, he needs to be in a separate cell block from everybody else. But once that’s accomplished, he’s easy to protect.

Using these numbers, and with 1.9 million Americans in lockup, and with 331.4 million outside, I get:

Homicide rate in lockup: 63 per million.
Homicide rate outside lockup: 65 per million.

But consider that 82 percent of homicide victims are male, and men make up 90 percent of those incarcerated in the U.S. If I was to control by gender, we would see a much lower homicide rate for men who are incarcerated as compared to those who are free.

This is not to say that 120 homicides a year is acceptable. But I think the legitimate and realistic purpose of secret service protection is to bring down the physical dangers of the presidency to that of average Americans, and, with Trump in a normal prison situation, that would be achieved.

Also consider the rate of motor vehicle deaths in and out of prison. Outside, I calculate about 128 per million. Inside? Maybe not zero, but darn close.

With normal prison guard protection, Trump is safer inside than I am outside. With armed Secret Service protection inside, I think his biggest risk of violent death would be from a Secret Service agent’s weapon.

And for those that think he’s not a naughty boy, but is in fact the Messiah:

I think he should be put on an orangic vegan diet and not allowed junk food. Do any NYS prisons have wind farms?

Was that a typo or deliberate?

I may start using the term “orangic” to refer to Trumpy things. I love that word.

Trump just had an interview with a probation officer (on Zoom and w/ his lawyer unlike most defendants ); could be required to undergoe a mental health exam as part of the presentancing report? What about afterwards if he gets a custodial sentence or supervised release? What about drug testing?

:face_with_hand_over_mouth: Freudian slip maybe?
