Sure, but no other prisoners have a large contingent of Secret Service agents around them 24/7 for their defense. And with a prison, it would be easier to keep weapons out, whereas the president can theoretically be in a sniper’s scope any time he is out and about in public, i.e., John F. Kennedy in Dallas.
For the full picture, you need to also consider that there are a lot more people outside of prison than inside. At any given moment, about 0.7% of the population is behind bars. Which means that you’re actually 25% more likely to be killed outside of prison than inside.
Though, that’s comparing to the population as a whole. Presidents are at much greater risk than ordinary citizens, with 9% of them having been assassinated. Trump would be far safer in a prison than he would be out and about.
Using these numbers, and with 1.9 million Americans in lockup, and with 331.4 million outside, I get:
Homicide rate in lockup: 63 per million.
Homicide rate outside lockup: 65 per million.
But consider that 82 percent of homicide victims are male, and men make up 90 percent of those incarcerated in the U.S. If I was to control by gender, we would see a much lower homicide rate for men who are incarcerated as compared to those who are free.
This is not to say that 120 homicides a year is acceptable. But I think the legitimate and realistic purpose of secret service protection is to bring down the physical dangers of the presidency to that of average Americans, and, with Trump in a normal prison situation, that would be achieved.
Also consider the rate of motor vehicle deaths in and out of prison. Outside, I calculate about 128 per million. Inside? Maybe not zero, but darn close.
With normal prison guard protection, Trump is safer inside than I am outside. With armed Secret Service protection inside, I think his biggest risk of violent death would be from a Secret Service agent’s weapon.
Trump just had an interview with a probation officer (on Zoom and w/ his lawyer unlike most defendants ); could be required to undergoe a mental health exam as part of the presentancing report? What about afterwards if he gets a custodial sentence or supervised release? What about drug testing?
