You seem to be saying there are no degrees of awfulness about Trumps actions and orders, and they all deserve equal efforts expended in opposition. I disagree with that.
I also disagree that the order to reinstate Alcatraz as a prison, in and of itself, is part of annihilating the rule of law. Your question upthread about what he does about the rules and regulations is still an open question, we don’t know what he will do or attempt.
What do you mean “not opposed”? I am hearing nothing but opposition so far. I have not seen or read one person outside of Felon47 that supports this, actually. Seems like almost universal opposition so far.
And I’m guessing that Trump thinks his social media posting is a legal directive to his subordinates, and he won’t need to follow up, provide details, or do anything else to make the project a success.
What may serve to stop the idea is the insane spending that would be required, and the fact that it will take a decade to have a functional building on that island even if everyone was keen on getting it done.
If you’re asking me – yes. It’s in the same category as “the wall that Mexico will pay for”. I could see some performative work being done at Alcatraz to “open it back up!” But I’ll eat my hat if it ever becomes a functioning prison again.
I’d bet Trump stops talking about it within a few months. But he got news coverage and raised some ire. Mission accomplished.
Yep. Organizational inertia is a heckuva thing. He can fire a million underlings, threaten a million more, and still make no progress on re-opening Alcatraz.
IMHO, this is like the Serenity Prayer (“… and the wisdom to know the difference”).
Ay, there’s the rub.
Reminder to myself and to all:
This must never be forgotten. Trump uses this approach to his estimable benefit.
With luck, there are still newsrooms with a big – proverbial or otherwise – white board or spreadsheet that keep track of all of this and visibly highlight those with the greatest potential impact on vulnerable groups, Americans, Democracy, etc.
Because it simply is some blend of exhausting and impossible to swing at every single pitch.
Yep, trump was directly asked in a recent televised interview whether it was his duty to support the Constitution, and he answered “I don’t know”. For any past President, especially a Democratic Pres, an answer like that would have caused a huge, huge media uproar and probably would have had serious real political implications. But it became a mere news footnote, overshadowed by stuff like this Alcatraz thing.
Also his supporters have established that they don’t care.
Owning the libs is more important than principles, or their own wellbeing. Or, they’ve just been trained to say “Yeah but the left thinks men are women” i.e. conservative media can always invent more outrageous things than the reality of trump’s actual words and actions.
And heck, the media frequently gets criticized for covering trump’s nonsense too much. They’re damned either way.
I’m probably not the first to suggest it, but Alcatraz sounds like a fitting retirement home for the old geezer.
24 hour “care”, lack of tripping hazards or dangerous cell-mates. Internet access limited (to nothing). Food standards to which he has become accustomed (do they serve ketchup in Federal prisons?).
He’d be the most important person there - if only because he would be the only incarcerated person there. His ego might be satiated with that level of importance.
The rest of the world outside the prison would be much, much better for his stay.
