In the USA it’ll all blow over in a week, if even that long. Heck, a goodly number of his adulators agree with that. The GOP politicians are too afraid of his mob and the media are all slavering over Hur’s hack attack on Biden.
Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, the NATO countries are developing contingency plans, Ukraine is despairing, China is ramping up their plans to take over Taiwan, and Putin is doing the happy dance.
Plenty of room for Trump to get even lower. And the Republicans will do nothing. Perhaps a furrowed brow, or even some “concern”. But they’ll all fall in line soon enough and will begin denouncing NATO.
It used to be “Party before Country” with Republicans.
This news story, sure, but if elected this mindset might carry through.
I’m just continually amazed at the wacky, off the wall shit he talks that’s gobbled up by these brainless idiots. There was a story last week of a kid who killed his dad because his dad got vaccinated.
If Trump regains the office, the US will withdraw from NATO, and Putin will have his way. Republicans are no longer merely the socially intolerant party of the past. Watch them line up to throw their support to Putin’s useful idiot.
That’s a relief to hear. Are there, however, Senate elections during Trump’s hypothetical next term? Elections that could give Republicans a scary Senate majority?
I’ve said it in other threads, but if you’d told me 30 or 40 years ago that the Republican party was going to be the party of the pro-Russian lunatic fringe I’d have laughed in your face.
I’m not sure how they’d enforce that. All Trump has to say, as Commander in Chief, is that there would be no US efforts to assist a NATO member attacked by his buddy Putin. Congress can’t make him wage war, even if they can technically declare war. We’re in for some interesting times ahead if Trump wins.
The core principle of the NATO alliance is Article 5 of the treaty, which provides for collective defense; i.e., NATO members will treat an attack on any member as an attack on all members and come to its defense. However, in the U.S., military action is at the discretion of the President as Commander-in-chief. Meaning, a President could simply repudiate Article 5, effectively (if not literally) withdrawing the U.S. from the treaty.
The remedy for Congress would be impeachment. But you know how that goes…
I would assume it would be the same way it works with every other law. It takes a 2/3 majority in the Senate plus a majority in the House to pass a new law overriding the old one. So that would be even more stringent requirements than just 2/3 of Senators.
Sure, there’s the nuclear option, where they change the filibuster, but no one seems ready to do it. Republicans would not only be empowering the Democrats if they regain control, but they’d be held responsible for all those bills they say they want to pass but “can’t.”
Plus, well, not even Republicans actually want to withdraw from NATO. The MAGA faction might, but you’d need the full party to pull off those shenanigans.
Trump is a madman. Forget all that talk about his cognitive ability. The true issue is that he is frothing at the mouth. He is reminded every day that Biden beat him in 2020 and enduring the bombardment of civil and criminal trials indicating that he has a decreasing chance of beating him in 2024 must be like fire ants under his skin.
And it’s only February. Nine more months to go. Will Trump make it without exploding? I’m doubting it.
Moreover, the mainstream media has to make his madness front page news. No more writing it off as Trump being Trump. I want headlines. Trump: Madman President?
