Trump to attend Black journalists' convention

Yeah, I’ve been trying to figure out what (if any) strategy was being attempted by Team Trump. I think that insulting Black journalists is not usually a good method for winning Black votes, but what do I know?

Trump probably thinks most people hate the media as much as he does so by that logic, if he goes in and insults black media it should impress the black audience.

Come to think of it, I believe her intention was to point out that the Census form should have more options.

And we should drop this hijack.

missed mod statement

Thank you for putting into words what I was thinking. If this is a strategy behind closed doors then telling Trump about it was a mistake. If you want to drive a wedge between black voters having an old white guy tell you who is black and who isn’t feels like just about the worst idea possible.

Agree. However, while we see this as a major unforced error, MAGA country will be thinking this was a brilliant move that both won over the black vote and owned Harris (and the libs). I say let the MSM and Faux News amplify both POV - it will seem outrageous to one and comforting to the other.

On that side the spin is that the journalists were mean. Poor Donald people were mean to him.

It’s pretty clear now why they picked Vance. He has no problem being Trump’s attack dog. He was immediately on the offense about the conference in a way that Trump does not have the ability to do.

Here’s a take on how I think Trump’s performance should have been handled at the NABJ conference:

https://www.newsnationnow.com/politics/2024-election/trump-clashes-with-journalists-nabj-reaction/

Journalist Ronald Martin, host of “Roland Martin Unfiltered,” says NABJ leadership should have intervened when Trump began insulting the panel.

“Somebody in leadership should have stood up and said, hold on one second. Before we continue any further, you have insulted our members,” Martin told the press after the heated panel. “What you’re not going to do is begin this conversation insulting members of this panel. But again, that’s called setting the tone at the outset, and we didn’t do it.”

Stern moderation would definitely put a speed bump in the path of Trump’s bulldozer methods.

I disagree with this. He’d just keep rolling regardless.

You really think that would slow him down? Unless you put up real physical barriers like turning off the microphone in between questions he will bulldoze through any metaphorical speedbumps.

Trump can’t fathom that he’s replaceable, that anyone could be as great as he himself is. His inability to state a clear answer to the question says more about his view of the role of Vice President than whether or not Vance is capable.

^ This gets my vote.

After all, he has nothing to lose. He could have shouted slurs nonstop and still be applauded.

This is how every debate, conference, interview, etc. with trump should be handled-- give him his allotted time to speak, then turn off his mic and let an adult in the room have a say. That way you get less of what happened yesterday:

trump: I’ve done more for the Black community than any president since Abraham Lincoln!
NABJ panelist: But what about LBJ and the…
trump: SINCE ABRAHAM LINCOLN, I SAY!!!

This.

He opened with calling one of the moderators “nasty” (guess the gender) and saying he’s “never” been asked questions in such a “horrible” manner before.

And that was under a normal line of questioning.

Calling him on his behavior would not create any impediments to his responses. He wouldn’t be taken aback in any way. He’d only repeat the same nonsense again.

Anyone else catch the first thing that set ol’ Donny boy off?

Being introduced as “Mr. Trump”!

The irony is I think this was actually a pretty softball interview. He was permitted to tell multiple lies about the economy, the border, energy, Kamala etc.

The toughest question was indeed the opener, but even then, a better person would have seen it as an opportunity to apologize, or flip it to something presidential “I might have made poorly-judged comments in the past, but I’m here because I want to understand the black community better and know what I can do for you and what we can do for America”.
It’s only a nasty question because he’s a nasty person standing by his disgusting words and actions.

In terms of the “why he did it” question, I think it was overconfidence, from him and his team, following the trifecta of debate, shooting survival, and convention. They genuinely thought he could lay on the charm

Honestly, that’s a reasonable thing to be annoyed by.

No, it’s not. Except in his own mind it’s a perfectly proper way to address him. Both using his former title and mister are correct.

Now Biden only calling him Donald is meant to annoy him.

Yeah, I think that was settles on July 19th when someone literally took a shot at him.

Compared to that the Black lady journalists were going easy on him, but it seems Trump has trouble with people who aren’t his base.

I think he might have been hoping that inside was safer than outside… which it is, on a certain level, but while his base does truly love him I think he’s perhaps been too insulated from those outside the base so the notion that there are people who really don’t like him keeps coming as a shock to the old man.

I thought he wasn’t on Xtwitter anymore, just Truth Social or whatever it is. But hey, thanks for taking one for the team so the rest of us wouldn’t have to.

He’s not, he hasn’t posted there in a long time, even though he was unbanned. His comment was on Truth Social. (ETA: he has one random 2023 post of his mugshot)
