As I understand it, he announced his intended appearance yesterday (Mon), and the convention is tomorrow (Wed).
Strikes me as a curious appearance, and wondered if any of you had any thoughts about it. Will be interesting to see how he is welcomed, the sorts of questions he is asked, and the responses of attendees.
My cynical fear is that he is hoping to either create a clusterfuck - which he will spin as his being treated unfairly. Or he could use it as a photo op to get images of his concern for and interactions w/ Black people.
I’m not sure whether I hope it just passes without event/notice, or whether the attendees take advantage of an opportunity to speak truth to power, and refuse to allow their organization to be manipulated.
The NABJ said in its statement that fellow presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris was also invited to participate in this year’s convention, but that her confirmation is pending.
(Emphasis mine.) So both Trump and Harris were invited. Trump agreed, Harris hasn’t yet.
They claim they will.
Lemon went on to say that the Trump event would allow Black journalists in attendance “to ask the tough questions that will provide the truthful answers Black Americans want and need to know.”
Though I agree that saying you will doesn’t necessarily mean you will. There’s a possibility they won’t be too tough because they want candidates in the future to agree to attend without fear of being raked over the coals.
Agriculture, obviously. Because one of the stereotypical migrant worker jobs is harvesting produce from the field, and the stereotypical Black occupation was…well, harvesting produce from the field.
Everyone else will be in another hall, watching over closed circuit, and laughing their heads off. Then the reaction video of that will be put out on social media.
The audience will be very relieved to hear that Trump will restore their ability to take on those choice harvesting jobs. I’m sure they’ve been lamenting the fact that they’ve had to resort to taking on white jobs like doctor, lawyer, astronaut, general, President, Vice President, etc. while those migrants get to have all the fun spending 12 hours a day picking crops in the hot sun.
See? This is why you invite the guy…paraphrasing because I can’t remember the exact quote:" For many years I knew her as Indian, she was an Indian person. And then she became black. But I didn’t know she was black."
I’m wondering if this is an attempt to solidify his support among stupid racists? If you wrote a fictional character saying stuff this stupid, no one would believe it!
I happen to be able to catch this live on MSNBC. I shouldn’t have wasted my time. Complete shit show as expected, it was painful to watch. He was constantly talking over the interviewers. I don’t know if the delay was due to technical issues or due to Trump throwing a temper tantrum because they wanted to fact check him in real time. I’ve heard both. I will confirm that even the interviewers were saying they were having technical issues as the interview was going on.
And I’ll say this also, I think Trump doesn’t understand that people can have more than one ethnic heritage? He doesn’t seem to understand that somebody can be both Indian and Black at the same time. Yet another attempt to create divisions among Americans.
Well, he succeeded in getting himself “above the fold” on the NY Times website, which might have been his aim after so many consecutive days of Harris being the big news.
No, he was trying to say that she is not a descendant of Black American chattel slaves. That she identifies as Asian Indian until she needs black votes, then she is “black”. He is definitely being advised on issues of race within the black community.
I actually understand what he is trying to do, as I’ve tried to explain before, but he can’t pull it off because he’s Trump.
