Trump to attend Black journalists' convention

Nice!

Pastor Terry K. Anderson explains why he’s “all in” for Harris.

ETA: The above quotes don’t constitute the entirety of his views.

I was annoyed but not surprised when I first heard that Trump would be speaking at the NABJ convention.

It makes perfect sense that a professional organization for journalists would extend an invitation to both candidates, but it’s still hard to stomach post Jan 6. Especially since his appearance caught a lot of attendees and participants off guard. At a minimum they could have handled the messaging better.

We already know exactly what’s going to come out of his mouth. Why give him another platform to dodge questions, hurl insults, and spout lies? He’s not going to be cooperative at all and he’s only going to use it as another opportunity to grab some quick photo ops and headlines to reinforce his love of “the Blacks” with his base.

As someone who used to belong to a Black professional organization, I can also imagine the frustration that some of the attendees likely felt. The founding principles of these organizations are under constant attack by folks on the right.

That said, it looks like I may have been wrong about this one. As predicted he was rude, combative, racist, and incoherent. However, I was not prepared for how poorly his visit would be received in the media. This won’t flip anyone who has already made a decision, but it might change the minds of some people in the middle or some folks in the don’t vote crowd.

It’s easy to forget about the large part of the population that doesn’t vote if you’re tuned into politics. I’m definitely guilty of neglecting their perspective, but I understand how one can become (or start out) apathetic towards voting. Especially if that person grew up Black in America. It is also surprisingly easy to completely ignore politics if you’re not interested. I know Black people (and others) in their 30s and 40s who registered to vote for the first time after Dobbs, and I’m happy to have them.

Could that be, in part at least, due to the reaction of Black journalists in attendance or watching, who then went back to their news organisations to write stories?

The old saying: “Never get in a fight with someone who buys ink by the gallon and paper by the reams” - perhaps came into play. Or the more modern concept of “influencer” - I would think that the Black journalists who attended that conference, and saw and heard Trump in person, would be high “influencers” in the media.

I wonder how many in attendance hate Harris Faulkner’s guts.

GOP Rep. Byron Donalds – who is black – was on This Week this morning deriding this all as a “phony controversy” that people don’t care about. Even as he repeatedly stated that Harris had entered the Senate as an Indian-American and that "people are trying to figure this out. At least Stephanopoulos called him out on it.

Absolutely! That was probably one of their goals after Trump decided to attend.

Many I’m sure, but she’s a Black journalist so her presence is almost expected.

Surely there’s a portmanteau of an Indian surname and Pocahontas he could come up with?

Choprahontas?

PocaHindu??

Funny, but could we not workshop this any further please?

To be clear, I certainly think this is a “Blazing Saddles” parody OF the racists exchange.

But I’ll happily go no further in that direction.

No, I get that. I just wanted to put the brakes on before it crossed a line. Particularly given what Trump actually said at the conference.

He can’t insult Harris because she’s half indian (or whatever it is) Vance’s wife is indian

I don’t see where that would stop Trump from mocking/insulting Harris for being half Indian. Last time around he sent an angry mob to attack his VP, what makes you think he gives a fig for the wife of a VP? Trump says and does whatever the hell he wants to, no on has control over him. The GOP tries to steer him by waving shiny objects in his line of sight but that’s rather shaky on even the best of days.

I’m torn. Do I go with, “Oh, it’s so sweet you think that!”, or do I go with, "No, it’s different! She is an is an Indian who married a white guy, while Harris is an Indian who married a white guy…hold on, I’ll come in again. "

That was after Pence was no longer useful to him. Pence wasn’t even going to be VP for much longer and certainly had nothing to offer.

Vance is sharing a ticket with him and attacks on Vance hurt the campaign. Even Trump would be aware of this (in a general sense at least).

Because it emphasized that he is utterly incapable of " meeting people in the middle." Anyone with any sense would have known what his reception was going to be, and prepared at least a few “Can’t we all get along?” kind on answers. But Trump just can’t do that.

He knows less about motorcycles than I know about Women.
