It authorizes a congress that can make laws that affect the nation. This is basic, non Alex Jones radical libertarian civics.
Then perhaps your local/state government should have considered repairing it with tax funds, but wait, that might require republicans in small towns to vote for a temporary tax increase to pay for infrastructure. Can’t have that.
Oh yeah, and I want ACA repealed. But it has to be done smart. The GOP has a very real dilemma though. If ACA is on a path to failure, they really don’t have a choice but to repeal whether they have a good replacement or not. As the party in power they will be blamed if it goes tits up on their watch.
But don’t act rashly. If it’s to be repealed, do it in 2019, after seeing how it’s working at that point and spending time working on actual proposals for its replacement.
If he waits it will become Trumps Guantanamo, the pressure will be strong to repeal day 1.
But luckily for those people, we have the word of Tim up there that the free market solves everything. So people with preexisting conditions will just be able to hop onto some other private insurance plan without being blacklisted by insurance companies not wanting to pay out higher costs. Especially now that there won’t even be the ghost of a chance that they can recoup it from more insurance buyers that are healthier, that tend to not buy healthcare at all when younger and healthier and poorer if not already granted a massive discount through an employer. But never mind, the status quo before was totally fine. Not like that socialist Hell Hole Israel, with it’s mandated insurance for the population with state subsidies, or scores of other nations. But that is one of the great perks about being a republican. You don’t have to be right on any policy issue, you just have to think you’re right. That is enough.
I don’t think Trump’s base cares about ACA. Trump is the candidate of the white working class, not big business like the rest of the party.
I have friends who are currently living with medical conditions they cannot afford to treat. The ACA made it so that they could actually get health insurance, and the subsidies ensured that they could pay for it. These people are going to suffer or die when the ACA is repealed. They are not “just fine”. There have been a lot of people who have not been “just fine” with the free market medical system.
The general welfare clause.
This brings up an interesting issue for trump supporters and everyone else in the nation. What will Trump actually do? I don’t believe Trump was ever a racist, he just played one on tv to con a segment of his white nationalist base. Just like he conned them into thinking their issues were his in various other areas, but what will Trump actually do?
I think he actually supports universal healthcare, but I can’t imagine he would go against his promise to repeal the ACA, and I don’t expect congressional republicans to ever back down and implement some UHC scheme on their own. I think he does believe in some trade barriers, but can he actually get those through? This is an area where some of his executive orders could come into play. Immigration? He won’t be getting Mexico to pay for any wall, but again, I can’t imagine him doing anything less than pushing through (with his rubber stamp republican congress on anti illegal immigration voting block) a giant wall with even more border patrol agents.
On foreign policy, I suspect he will line up with where most people in the US are, more isolationist, he will diminish support for foreign bases and nato, retreat from the world stage and the expense to the extent he can. Incidentally, these goals of his coincide PRECISELY with the goals of Julian Assange who I see as an anti American anarchist that wants to see US power and influence in the world diminish, and the same goes with Putins Russia. Their rationales are different, Assange just hates western power meddling, whereas Putin wants a retreating US presence to give him more breathing room to move into places in his sphere of influence. What is it the Russians were caught chanting when seizing of Crimea was engaged in? Novorossiya
Legal immigration from the middle east will come under much greater scrutiny, this is one area where I genuinely think his talk about muslims and Islam is clearly more prevalent with the bulk of a nation. I do hope it does not get too extreme, I am hostile to Islam in general, but I don’t want to shut the door to people like Ayaan Hirsi Ali who comes from that background but switched away from the darkness of the faith. Became better than her religion and founder ever was.
Tax policy is something I assume will be a total disaster, If Kansas is any guide the rubber stamp to tax breaks is not something I expect will yield dividends for the nation, but perhaps some of the protectionism will have counter effects that are more positive than people give him credit for.
Anyway, I am weary from this election, I look forward to detoxing from it all. It will take weeks, several youtubers I listen to are avid Trump supporters and I will have to hear them gloat for weeks on end now, same goes to many of the talk radio hosts I listen to. I might just switch to other podcasts to avoid the irritation.
I actually think you can sell UHC to Republicans, but it has to be sold as something cheap. Universal catastrophic care could pass Congress if a Republican President suggested it.
So Trump could just say, “The US government will pay all medical bills once out of pocket expenses reach 15% of a person’s income in a given year.” I think as a replacement for ACA a lot of Republicans might go, “hmmm, that might just work.”
adaher, your post #19 is cogent, but it is essentially all process. What RESULTS are you looking for in terms of the metrics that define a country’s economic and social health?
Here’s something else I wonder, actually: do Trump supporters generally agree with Mike Pence’s viewpoints? What about Congressional Republicans’? Or do they just ignore them in favor of the main man, which people are very much known to do?
The power struggle is going to be real. Paul Ryan SHOULD be the real leader of the party, at least on domestic issues. Pence is VP and will act primarily as liaison to Congress since Pence knows these people and has cred within the conservative base and the Tea party. The establishment guys like McConnell will actually be a hard sell, but McConnell always plays ball and he’s the leader of that faction.
The fear for me is that as with George Bush, Congressional Republicans will just roll over for Trump and see their political future as tied to his. I’m hoping they learned their lesson. Democrats stayed in power in Congress for 40 years by NOT seeing their careers as tied to the Democratic President. Republicans should take the lead on domestic policy and provide vigorous oversight of the administration.
From here
Preamble
Article 1 – Section 8:
Having a healthy population would certainly contribute to the general welfare.
Why do object to health insurance?
It’s true that past interpretations of the Constitution pre-new Deal might have not allowed for the federal government to give people health insurance, but I’m more of a textualist than an originalist and the general welfare clause does seem to allow Congress a great deal of latitude to spend money.
Of course, the federal government cannot set up any insurance system they want, the Supreme Court made that clear a few years ago. Ironically, single payer is totally constitutional but ACA wasn’t in many aspects because it required Congress to assert powers it didn’t actually have.
Hi all! Someone can help me here please?? :smack:http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=19768711#post19768711
Thank you!!
What is wrong with the current strategy of relying on Iraqi/local forces to do the ground fighting against ISIL/Da’esh while U.S. forces train, equip, provide guidance, and provide air support? Iraq has taken back most of the territory that Da’esh seized in 2014 and is currently in the process of isolating Mosul, which is the first step before the city proper can be directly assaulted so as to prevent Da’esh forces from either retreating or bringing in substantial reinforcements.
The initial steps have been made to begin the isolation operation against the Da’esh capital of Ar Raqqah, with the biggest impediment to this being done sooner was figuring out the composition of forces to actually do the job without making it a wholly-Kurd-run operation, since Ar Raqqah and its surrounding area has primarily an Arab and not Kurdish population.
The only way for any of this to have proceeded faster would be for U.S. ground forces to be the ones doing the fighting. The Government of Iraq doesn’t seem to want that, since their political situation between Shiite factions and the discontented Sunnis is precarious enough and U.S. forces aren’t exactly popular. The (not legitimately recognized anymore) Government of Syria already strongly protests the hundred or so special forces personnel we have embedded with the Kurds in northeastern Syria. I imagine they wouldn’t feel especially fond of a U.S. infantry division or two, which would also increase the chances of U.S. and Assad regime forces accidentally firing on each other and coming into conflict.
The big thing that I expect is this: Trump is pro-business. American business in general has been barricaded for the last 8 years against the anti-business stance from the Obama White House. I expect to see the economy open up and start to grow again. And millions of small business owners like me can now hope to make a decent living from our businesses, rather than lying awake at night wondering how we are going to make next month’s rent.
Nuking them would be quicker.
Is Trump pro-small business, pro-all business or pro-Trump’s Business?
What is his record when dealing with other companies?
A government of by and for the people does not imply that it provides stuff to the people. I think universal healthcare would be a good idea because of improved productivity and some synergistic savings that come with things like early detection of cancer, and so does Trump.
Its barely been a year since Trump wanted to replace Obamacare with another form of universal health care.
Would you make a prediction on what you think the result would be. For comparison, there are estimated to be between 11 and 12 million undocumented immigrants currently in the US. What do you think it will be in four years? What would you like it to be?
I feel you. Do you think this actually will change? I think it will not, since I don’t think Trump knows how to fix it any more than you or I do.
