Or Hegseth will (perhaps inadvertently) include the Minister of Defence in a Signal call where invasion plans are being discussed.
How many Chinese cargo ships have to be sunk before they enter the war? European?
@Frodo is right, it would be a blockade. Much less chance of dragging neutral countries into the war if you just make the freighters turn around. The blockade will be harassed by remote control Sea-Doos full of explosives. Not many will have to hit their targets to be very costly to the invaders.
Trump is thoroughly in the pockets of fossil fuel companies. Look at all of his attacks on renewable energy. Even ignoring climate change and pollution, renewables are usually the cheapest form of energy, so the Trump regime’s plan has been to permanently kill off renewables before the market dramatically shrinks fossil fuel use.
A US invasion of Canada is quite likely to bring about sanctions from much of the rest of the world. I’m not sure that Europe can get by without Russian and US oil exports, but I’m sure they’ll try.
Reducing the market for US fossil fuel exports may not be enough to dissuade the Trump regime, but it could mean losing support from some very powerful groups. All that means, is that an invasion is unlikely to occur until the Trump regime has completely consolidated power, and is able to defenestrate (or blow up yachts) of any oligarchs that don’t stay in line.
I see what you did there.
Sea-Doos? Nah, Relic’s Jet Boat. Americans will feel so silly reporting “Sir, we’ve just been sunk by Relic’s Jet Boat” that we’ll get multiple strikes in before word gets around.
Bombardier is a Canadian company. I imagine they would step up in the countries time of need. It’s the remote control Ski-Doos that will be the real danger, as they cross the borders seeking soft targets in North Dakota and Idaho.
We joke, but yeah, any old junker that floats can be turned into a guided drone.
Yep. That’s what I saw you do. ![]()
Infinite; they are not going to go to war with a nuclear power led by a senile lunatic in a hopeless bid to defend Canada.
What I do expect however is the replacement of NATO with an European/Chinese alliance against the increasingly aggressive and irrational US. A new Cold War.
A better question to ask about European NATO countries is, will they accept Canadian refugees? If any of us manage to escape, during or after the US invasion, will we have some place to go? I’d hope that the UK and France would be automatic yeses, because of our history with them, but who knows?
Far be it from me to believe Trump has a plan. However. consider his statement in Quantico about using American cities for military training. Training for what? Clearly nothing Constitutional. But, what they are doing is working with defiant municipal governments to control civilian populations. I don’t claim they are doing it well or accomplishing a goal, but they are gaining experience for one of the challenges they would face in Canada. That’s training.
The big difference is, any US troops on Canadian streets are clearly legitimate targets, and will be treated as such. No one in the US is yet willing to take that step.
Why? Americans don’t seem to care all that much about what he’s doing, at least not enough to do much about it. Canadians might as well plan for the real possibility of what he may do to us in 2026 or 2027.
This gets my vote.
That would make America’s problems our problems. They are a dying people; we should let them pass.
The smart money would be more interested in mergers than running around in the forest with a gun. The combined energy and mining resources would dominate those markets. Canadas’ healthcare could cure the US. Canadian politicians and voters could displace MAGA. Maybe we change the name to UASA.
Which is why after a conquest they’d never be allowed any sort of say in politics. The former Canada would be looted and oppressed.
But, it will not be a WW1 type conquest. It will be dissident politicians and industrialists who would benefit by the merger. The citizenry will be heavily propagandized and given a choice: enjoy the benefits of a merger or the deprivations of a Gaza like attack.
Consider the current US situation. We are watching the ascendency of MAGA and there is nothing we can do about it, in spite of the myth that we are protected by the second amendment and the fact that the Magats are a minority.
What? No. It would be a blitzkrieg style takeover, followed by the imposition of far-right policies at gunpoint and everything valuable being taken by Trump and company. “Dissident politicians and industrialists” won’t get a say in the matter.
The latter part of this is hogwash. This situation is a lot further gone than many want to admit, but it’s not yet irretrievable. Any number of dictators a lot more established than Trump is so far have been kicked to the curb by their citizens in the past few decades. And you probably don’t even need to do anything beyond voting the Republicans out of the House and Senate next fall, and probably doing some mass demonstrations to make sure the results are honoured. Stop capitulating in advance.
