I’m not picturing Trump physically contacting Biden. Trump would be aware that a live Biden mic would pick up all of Trump’s words even if Trump is standing slightly off to the side.
Picture Trump looming over Hillary Clinton in 2016. That’s what we’ll be seeing.
As for the Secret Service: so long as there’s no physical contact, I don’t see them intervening (neither Biden’s nor Trump’s details). They see Presidents standing very close to other people all the time. And in this situation, every one of the few people in the room will have been closely vetted.
I don’t think so. I think he’d bust out with some un-witty comeback–'Do you own this stage, Joe? I don’t think so’ or ‘you old people are so touchy’ or something equally dumb but easily seized-on, with glee and admiration, by the MAGA folks.
CNN needs to have a plan to combat this. Because it’s totally Trump’s style.
This is crazy talk. Trump is a coward who’s extremely averse to any form of physical activity or confrontation. Walking across the stage and trying to bully Biden out of his microphone is abojt as likely as him challenging Biden to see who can do the most push-ups.
I wonder if there will be any rule or convention having to do with when the camera has a shot of one of them and when there’s a two shot of both. Trump will abuse this if he can.
But we don’t know what the technology will be like or what the participants know about it.
Biden should have some comebacks and possibly a new nickname for turnp if he tries to stalk. If they don’t prepare for that it’s malpractice.
You can’t win an insult fight with Trump. Best if Biden just sticks with “come on man, that’s just pathetic.” Or just talk slowly to him, as you would to a child.
How about if it’s not an insult but its a plainly true statement. They have a lot of good minds working on it and they can come up with newsworthy tropes for Joe to say that sound authentic. If he goes back to things he said before it won’t make much of an impression. But trunp will look like a flaming maniac either way. It’s not how Biden looks then, it’s about turnps reactions. That will be the news. Hopefully mute, mic-off reactions.
Trump could fill his diaper and have a stroke on stage, and all the MAGA faithful 35% will hear is that he won convincingly. And 40% of the population will not even know there was a debate. And the remaining 25% were going to vote for Biden anyway.
If this isn’t a general thread for discussing the debate, apologies — and we should start one.
According to this article, the Supreme Court — and John Roberts specifically — is deliberately delaying controversial rulings to reduce chances of being attacked at the June 27 debate:
This seems to me to go against the letter of the speedy trial clause (6th amendment) and the spirit of the first amendment right to free speech. If true, Roberts is trying to manipulate a critic (Joe Biden) so there will be a smaller audience when he criticizes unpopular SCOTUS rulings.
Trump himself infamously stated he loved the uneducated. I try to stay out of political discussions with my MAGA mother, but couldn’t help it this past weekend as I took her grocery shopping. I’ll skip boring you with a blow by blow account of the conversation, but my MAGA mother was surprised to learn that Arkansas was MAGA country and Sarah Huckabee Sanders was a MAGA governor. When I said Huckabee Sanders was MAGA my mother’s immediate response was, “I don’t know if she’s MAGA” as if she doubted what I was saying.
I wouldn’t say that the politically disinterested are dumbasses. I would conjecture that their support is soft.
To me a dumbass tends to be opinionated, as well as ill-informed. The stupidity is active, not passive.
Anyway, I agree turnout is important, but I think the swing vote is underestimated on twitter. Women have to decide if they like the idea of being forced to carry a rapist’s baby to term, or whether they like being lied to by the anti-abortion movement who claimed for years that there would be exceptions to protect the life of the mother. Veterans have to decide whether the 240 year experiment with democracy is worth protecting. Conservatives have to think about what they’re conserving - hey it’s your life, your dance.
And liberals need to figure out how they’re going to fight.
