Quite true. But there may be less support for Trump in 2028 (assuming the world and Donald are still here, then). There will have been years of poverty and lack of health care resulting from the Trump/Project2025 policies, to name but two factors.
If Trump’s popularity dropped enough to awaken the self-preservation instincts of Congress and/or the Cabinet, we might see a concerted effort to eject Donald from the seat of power. Which by then will probably be made of solid gold, given Donald’s plans for the White House (including bathroom renovations).
In any case it’s pretty clear that he has no intention of leaving voluntarily. You don’t spend $200 million on a ballroom “for the people;” you spend it for your Coronation Ceremony and Kissing of the Ring Ceremonies and those sorts of events, to be scheduled on a regular basis for the next however-many-years you hope to live.
Frankly, at this point, I’m going to be very disappointed if Trump doesn’t try a 3rd term run. I would be deprived of seeing him get the smackdown from the courts.
Except He wouldn’t. SCOTUS is almost entirely in His pocket, and he’s trying to stack the Federal courts. He has been systematically dismantling the United States with his henchmen. I’m not sure we will have mid-term elections, let alone 2028 elections. Assuming there are elections and He is voted out, why would he leave? ‘Because He was voted out. He has to leave!’ ‘But what if He doesn’t?’
People say we have to stop Trump, or else He’ll become a dictator. Guess what? He’s already a dictator.
I am so very sick and tired of hearing “I hope he tries to do it, because he will finally get the smackdown he deserves!”, because reality and fantasy seldom line up to anyone’s satisfaction. If you give this bastard enough rope you might get a swing, a hammock, a fence….anything but a noose.
I’m in the same boat. Any hope I had of Trump ever getting the smackdown he deserves ended with the last election. Sauron won. The sad fact of life is sometimes the bad guy wins. If Republicans were interested in putting the smackdown to Trump they had plenty of opportunities to do so. They chose not to. Trump famously told us he could shoot someone in broad daylight and wouldn’t lose any supporters. I think he could announce he loved visiting Epstein’s island and he wouldn’t lose any followers.
Trump is demolishing the East Wing of the White House in order to put in a ballroom to his specifications. These are the actions of an autocrat, not someone expecting to be no longer in the White House in January, 2029.
This is Trump’s way of leaving a permanent mark on the White House. As he has demonstrated, you can move portraits of past presidents around, add tacky gold accents everywhere, and even dig up the Rose Garden, but all of those are easily reversible by presidents in the future. You couldn’t just remove his monstrosity of a ballroom or put the East Wing back. Trump’s leaving a turd in the punchbowl future generations won’t be able to ignore.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate Trump as much as anyone else, but I don’t think the big ballroom is a bad idea. The White House has lacked a huge place to hold formal state dinners (some state dinners had to be held in tents on the lawn), the room can be used for huge press conferences or all kinds of other non-dancing activities, etc.
If anything, it would be the best justice for Trump to go to all this trouble to build a ballroom, have it not be completed until the end of 2028, and he doesn’t get to use it before it’s time for him to leave office.
I don’t know if this is old news since the interview was months ago, but in an interview with Bill Mahre, Scott Bannon hinted that the plan is to have Trump become President the afternoon of 20 January 2029 meaning run as VP and have the President resign within a few hours.
My question is what incentive is there for someone to resign the presidency for the benefit of Mr. Trump?
While my wife and I were out walking today near our hotel to get some Aleve (flying in economy sucks, have I ever mentioned that?), she noticed a “Trump 2028” sticker on a signpost.
