I for one hope it is a portent of the end of days for this particular iteration of the Republican Party, wherein the nastier components of the far right start to tear each other apart like starving rats in a bucket.
The Sane Republicans can then take the party back, and hopefully always remember the time they tried to make a bargain with the nut-cases, and ended up being taken over by them.
It should only boister his supporters. “Yeah! Fuck this, fuck that, fuck left fuck FOX… oh wait. Let me make out with O’Reilly before I’m dragged out!”
So, if I look at what recent history teaches us, I have good news and bad news. The bad news: yes, people like Trump get elected. Trump probably will, too.
However, recent history teaches us that once in power, he will be sidelined by more experienced politicians. And he will concentrate himself on the few issues he really cares about, and let the rest take care of itself. Berlusconi, for instance, cared mainly about changing the law so he could postpone his own persecution. Berlusconi also had already bought most of the press before he went into politics (and that fact is relevant to this particular thread, which is about Trump vs Fox) . The few business-moguls that say they will run the country more efficient then the politicians, have never been proven right.
So the good news is, such politicians usually don’t matter much in the great scheme of things. They are not good for a country, but not desastrous either. And they are entertaining, and they do accomplish that the non-intellectual part of the voters feels heard. But they can’t keep it up, can’t make real results (usually because what they want is against the law and against the constitution) and they usually slink back into obscurity after too many embarrassing fights, gaffes and incidents. And after that, the country is usually cured if its need for a populist politician for about two terms. And after that seven years, there is space for a new populist.
This really feels more like following his core constituency than leading. There’s already been comments among them that they have been boycotting Fox or at least specific Fox personalities. It will be interesting what effect this has on the free air time for candidates. Fox is obviously going to keep filling it’s schedule sliding more air time to those that will be interviewed. More news oriented shows that aren’t Fox are even less likely to play ball with his wish to restrict questioning. They might restrict coverage to avoid the hassle or they jump in both feet and we’ll see follow on media fights/boycotts. That could end up restricting him to more entertainment focused talk shows.
In early primary campaign season where name recognition and air time has a lot to do with poll numbers Trump’s ridden both to leads. It will be interesting to see how changing the dynamic as we get in to serious campaign time affects things.
What will be REALLY interesting is if Trump wins the nomination and continues his boycott of Fox. Or even more interesting, if he encourages his followers to do the same.
I have to admit, I would relish Fox getting hoisted on it’s own petard like that.
Actually this is one in which they both lose I think.
Honestly this election season reminds more and more of the Black Mirror episode “The Waldo Moment” … which wasn’t even a very good ep, but captures the process I think.
Yes I certainly hope silly twitter arguments don’t gain popularity outside of Trump’s crazed followers.
I wonder if Trump is of a mind to play hardball on this boycott. Like specifically scheduling interviews on competing networks during Fox shows he specifically wants to mess with. Like say when Megyn Kelly was doing a Jeb interview.
