Trunk, which part of "stop hijacking this thread" did you not understand?

I’m in total agreement with all of Rubystreak’s post, as well as Trunk’s original objections and AuntiePam’s too. Yes, Trunk was wrong for the namecalling, etc., but when something you’ve invested so much time, energy and thought into is ruined (yes, that one thing was ruined, not his life), it can be quite disappointing.

Kudos to C K Dexter Haven for doing the right thing.

Did I say that? No. I understand. I just don’t think it warranted his childish ranting and raving in the thread. You didn’t respond that way, although I’d consider you well within your rights to tell the newbie what he’d done and why you were upset. It was taken beyond that to assholery. And not just once, over and over.

Didn’t say that, either. Don’t know him enough to like him or not. I just don’t like people going off on new posters who post to a thread on a subject they like and may not be returning because they got the back end of a blast furnace. And who would blame that person?

Again. Not what I said. And my response to Trunk wasn’t half as demeaning and shitty as his to that person’s. There were other, more tactful ways he could have communicated ithat and you know it. He was disappointed. Duly noted. I would’ve been too, yes. Is there any, ANY excuse for going off on someone like that, not once, but three times, in a Cafe Society thread? Especially with someone who probably just didn’t know any better?

As was Trunk’s. Who has been here…well, look at that. As long as me, pretty much. He definitely knew better, but, as stated IN THE OP OF THIS THREAD: “Didn’t give a fuck.” Yes, he’s the very picture of the innocent and injured party.

Is there any reason at all to think that person came in JUST to spoil y’all’s good time? Other than the fact that he (probably) inadvertently did so and you want someone to rip to shreds because of that? No. Had you been reamed like that after your second post…would YOU come back? And…I’m sure you don’t have ANY posts you’re ashamed of, right? Really? None?

edited for nasty grammar and spelling.

I’m glad he did it so I didn’t have to resist the temptation to do so. I totally understand where he’s coming from. I feel exactly as he felt and agree 100% with everything he said. Fever should have at LEAST gotten a Mod Warning. He got not even his post deleted until Dex did the right thing.

The thread was ruined anyway at that point. Trunk’s assholery is not 1/100th of Fever’s IMO.

You know him well enough to bring up some other thread in which he’d bothered you, though, so it seems like you’ve gained some distaste for him.

I hope Fever does not come back. Fuck him. He did not have the basic respect for the posters on this board to find out the rules for posting spoilers, nor read previous threads about The Wire to see that we do NOT post spoilers for future eps, not even stuff from the previews. On that basis alone, he’s an asshole. I repeat, fuck him.

And I think it was about half as demeaning and shitty as Fever deserved. Apparently our MMV.

I wouldn’t have gone off but the once if it’d be me first on the scene, but that’s because some troll is not worth me getting banned or suspended over. Not because I wouldn’t want to, esp. considering the lame, idiotic mod response before Dex showed up.

Call it… a feeling. Just a feeling. But I do think so. Again, YMMV, but that is how I feel.

What does my history have to do with this? Do you want to get personal with me over this? I fucking hope not. Because no, despite my utter lack of perfection as a poster here, no, I never made a mistake like that, in which I deliberately ruined someone’s enjoyment of the ending of their favorite show, in which they’d invested many hours of viewing time.

Everyone makes mistakes, but I don’t think it was a mistake. I think it behooves new posters to familiarize themselves with the rules before dropping a turd in the punchbowl like that. I think your defense of Fever is misguided. I hope this doesn’t turn into a personal slapfight between you and me over this, because some troll is getting way too much satisfaction over this as it is.
.

Ummm…I was referring to your thread. The one you started. That this thread is about.

Oh, good. you sound completely reasonable at this point.

Okay. You win You’ve completely convinced me. Fever was obviously a dastardly troll who was sitting in wait, lo, these many years, just looking for an excuse to ruin this show for you and others. I bet he has a boatload of socks just lined up and waiting for the next big plot spoiler so he can do it again!!

Look, I’m sorry. It’s obvious that you’re upset, and I do get that, but the most I would have done was what Soapbox Monkey did. Namely, express frustration, reported the post and ask for a mod to fix it. Obviously, that is just me. This fictional show, however, seems to be far more central to your life than my favorite show is to mine.

And in response to your questions, no. I really cannot imagine getting that angry and worked up over a tv program. Or movie. Or book. I’d get annoyed, you bet. But not so frothingly pissed off that I’d respond in the manner Trunk did.

Calm down, huh? Really. I asked if you’d ever made a post you were ashamed of or embarrassed by to hopefully generate a little (as Trunk rather ironically invoked) perspective. Everyone fucks up occasionally. And the only reason you think it was intentional is because it’s personal to you. If it weren’t, maybe you’d be a bit more objective about it, no?

Maybe my defense of that person is misguided, maybe not. I doubt we’ll find out, because who would come back after that kind of welcome? He apologized and got flamed for it. You don’t know he’s a troll. You’re pissed because your show was ruined and you won’t enjoy it as much. And yet, I’m sure you’ll still enjoy it. On the whole…really not worth getting histrionic about. Is it?

On further consideration, I also have to add that the tag “Season Spoiler” that SkipMagic added was not descriptive enough for the magnitude of what was in that spoiler, and was wrong-headed way of handling it anyway. If we don’t want any future spoilers in our threads on The Wire, and the regular participants in those threads have agreed that we won’t post them, shouldn’t we be able to just ask a Mod to delete them and have them go? Or is that not how things work around here?

Guffaw.

  1. I’m not a guy.

  2. My apology was sincere. It was a temporary lapse in judgement, and I regret not having the foresight to see the level of disturbance it would cause. I guess I really can’t do anything but apologize again: I’m sorry. :frowning:

I don’t think Fever’s behavior was reasonable either. I don’t think his ignorance is a valid excuse for what he did. Read a couple of past threads before you post your massive, huge spoiler, ya know?

 Yeah, that’s exactly what I’ve said. Look, you’re not going to agree with me about this, and I don’t care if I convince you or not. I feel how I feel, you disagree. I’m OK with that.

“Central to my life”? Not wanting the ending of a 5 year time investment ruined means that the show is central to my life? No, it means I want some basic respect from my fellow posters, and I dont’ want a pile of shit in my Inbox from this board in response to my OP. I feel that the board via Fever violated my trust. Is it central to my life? No, but it’s irritating as all fuck.

Well, you’ll note my response to the thread. Mild by comparison. But that’s because it’s not worth getting warned over a troll.

No, I think I’d pretty much think the same way if it were a topic in which I were not interested. I’d think the guest was a trolll and the post should be deleted. I’d feel bad for the people whose show was ruined. Of course you only get worked up over things that are personal to you. That’s sort of a tautology, right?

I’m sure I’ll get over it, but yes, my enjoyment of the upcoming eps of the show has definitely been diminished. My enjoyment of posting here about the show? Now almost zero, which is also aggravating. I’m also not too happy about how the first Mod involved handled it. I sympathized with Trunk’s response, though I wouldn’t have reacted that way. What else can I say? Are we allowed to vent anger in the Pit, or do we need to respond in a way that you approve of, lest we be labeled “histrionic”?

Really? I mean, I don’t follow the show and I didn’t see what the spoiler was, but I think if I saw something that said “Season Spoiler” and I was actively following a show, I’d stay as far away as possible (I understand the original complaint is that that tag wasn’t in place, I’m responding to this particular comment). This furor ranks right up there with the HARRY POTTER COMING OUT SOON NO SPOILERS OH NOES!!!111 throes of passion this board went into.

Or maybe you’re so invested in it you thought the season spoiler might be what color shoes Jimmy’s wearing in the finale?

Don’t let it bother you. People around here can be assholes. They’ll get over it.

Welcome to the SDMB. But these days “guy” can be used generically for all people … unless this situation applies to you

Doesn’t no spoilers mean no spoilers? Or doesn’t it? That’s my question. It also does not answer the question of it getting e-mailed to subscribers to the thread, who have expectations of what will and won’t be posted, esp. without spoilers warnings.

Garfield226, yeah, I’m an asshole sometimes, but I really do think Fever was the asshole here. She’s admitted as much. Let people have their reactions.

Are you referring to your thread title, the one that says “open spoilers”?

Well, the mods put a sticky up a month before the release of that Harry Potter with a warning that anybody revealing spoilers would be in deep shit, so I’d say you are misremembering that furor. The mod response here was pretty darn blasé comparatively. I guess the mods are bigger Harry Potter fans than Wire fans.
eta: It’s not hard to believe a new member that saw “open spoilers” in the thread title wouldn’t know that here on the SDMB that means “open spoilers up to the most recently released episode, future episode spoilers should be hidden”

Actually, that was what I was recalling. Though most of the furor was actually surrounding the number of threads we had on it and not what any of them did or did not reveal, now that I remember.

And she has apologized. Twice. Frankly, that’s one more than I would have done if I had been treated like this on a board I had never posted on before.

“Open spoilers” following an episode title though? How could anyone mistake what constitutes a spoiler?

I’ll give Fever the benefit of the doubt. Hell, I’ll give her more than that if she posts some actual content in a Wire thread.

Why did it take Dex to remove the post? And why wasn’t she warned? Is there some procedural here that I’m missing for why posts are or aren’t removed and people warned or not? Does an apology get you out of a warning?

Is the “open spoilers” in a thread title not clear in what it means? Do we have to post a disclaimer at the beginning of every thread? I will if necessary, but honestly, didn’t realize it was necessary. Posting a YouTube link to a bootleg scene from a future ep is sort of out of the realm of what would be posted under “open spoilers” IMO.

The Mod reaction has been rather blase. I think that’s fucked up, considering what was posted. But whatever. I think enough ire has been dispensed.

A warning for…what, exactly? Posting a spoiler about a show in a thread about that show, a thread that says “open spoilers” IN THE THREAD TITLE?

You have got to be kidding.

But you DID put “open spoilers” in your title, right? Some mod didn’t stick that in later, did they?
