I’m trying to find a movie or a television show for a co-worker, that may or not be from the 80’s or late 70’s. The best description she can give is that it involves a teenager hang gliding and then zapping into another dimension or time, into a fantasy land. There is an evil man riding a black horse chasing him, and the horse has a harness that is decorated with human skulls.
She remembers watching this as a recording, from the television, off a beta max tape. At work, we’ve had a string of successes of finding half-remembered films (Gandahar) and music videos (Union of the Snake) thanks to Lord Google and his imperial consort, Lady Youtube, but this movie/show seems to be above their grasp.
So I turn to the Teeming Millions. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks!
Ninja Edit: The teenager gets back home via hang gliding as well.
The fact that the same tape showed the kid hang gliding both into and out of the other universe indicates that it either was a movie, or that the entire television series wasn’t about him going into this universe, which makes searching for it even more difficult. This was a U.S. show, right?
We he barbarian like?
Maybe one of the Ator films?
I believe that it was an American production: the actor’s spoke American English. We are in fact unsure if it was a feature film, or a story that was a part of an Amazing Story-type program. We don’t think it was a part of series of films/shows about hang gliding in and out of this other dimension, so we think it was a one-shot episode or film.
Edit: We’re pretty sure it wasn’t any of the Ator films. The protagonist is a boy/teenager. I asked if the villain was a barbarian or a black knight type, but we can only remember that the horse was black.
Potential new detail: the hang gliding boy got help from the denizens of this “fantasy/sci-fi world,” and the helpers may have been “nuns.” But this is a detail my co-worker is least-sure about. Maybe it will help.
I’ve got a long list of fantasy movies involving nuns…but I don’t think any of them are exactly what you are looking for.
Haha, yeah probably not! We are “110% sure” the movie had hang gliding in it. There may have been “some chick with long, curly brown hair.” So that narrows it down, certainly. Thanks for the interest so far. There must be an answer somewhere!
What about Yor, Hunter From the Future?
Yor was our first guess, actually. But the protagonist wasn’t a barbarian, or an adult, more like a teenager. A little extra detail is that the boy doesn’t fly out alone, but with a group of other hang gliderers (?). He gets separated from the group, which is when he gets “zapped” into the fantasy world. The “zap” was more of a sound effect rather than a budgeted special effect.
It sounds just stupid enough to be something I would have watched.
Google turns up Winners.
Aquadementia has it, then.
My trick for finding movie and TV obscurities with “that one thing” someone remembers is to do a keyword search on IMDB. Nine times out of ten, that’ll do it, but Winners is obscure enough that it does not have a full set of keywords.
So I was working from these lists :
Success! I knew the Teeming Millions would not fail!
(My co-worker is saying that when the hang glider disappears in a shower of sparks, that was her “mind exploding.”) Thank you, all.
