Trying to remember a novel: Jesuit missionaries in Canada?

It was written in the 80’s or 90’s. Long and dense, with an avant-garde slant. I have a vague recollection that the young author went by three names, like David Foster Wallace, but it wasn’t David Foster Wallace.

Anybody remember this book?

Haven’t read the book, but could it be Black Robe that was turned into a movie?

Nope. Less mainstream than that.

Black Robe II: The Jesuits’ Revenge?

Found it!

William T. Vollman’s Fathers and Crows

It’s Quakers rather than Jesuits, but you might also like Voyageurs, by Margaret Elphinstone.
She’s very good, and a bit easier to read than the Vollman (which I enjoyed, but read in several long chunks)
