Why can’t I find it in the App Store? I need to upgrade my mom’s iPad IOS and the people in the Apple store said that I could do it myself. But I can’t find 8 anywhere. Help!
It’s not in the App Store.
You need to either plug it into iTunes, or go to Settings->General->Software Update.
Thanks!
Where in iTunes? I search for IOS8 and all that comes up are podcasts about it.
Go into settings general and look for software update. It may already have a notification that one is available, other wise let it do its search. If its an ipad 1, its not supported by 8.

Yeah, it’s a much earlier iPad, but the people in the Apple Store said it was updateable.
I’m in Settings-General, but see no Software Update anywhere.
On my Ipad 2, its the second entry right below “About”
Declan
Hers goes straight from “About” to “Usage”
You’re likely on a very old software version then. Simply plug into iTunes and click “Check for Updates” if it doesn’t automatically start downloading.
What is her current OS rev level , ios 6 or 5 something.
Declan
Lower. Not sure but it’s less than 5. We needed to do the upgrade because Skype no longer accommodates any OS level 4 or lower.
I dont know if you can make the jump from say 4 to 8 in one shot, you might have to update to 6 first, and then make the jump to 8. So this means that you have to find the iso on the net for six and manually update it, by pressing the shift button when you click on update in itunes, assuming your on a pc, mac may be different.
This is one link

No, I’m on an iPad. You mean I have to upgrade twice?!?
(I appreciate your help; wish Apple store employees weren’t such lying fucks)
I know your on an ipad, but you normally have to do the update while hooked up to your pc or mac itunes, not the one on the ipad.
Have you tried to go through the computer itunes ?
Declan
No, they managed to not mention that part, and I don’t have a USB with me, so I think I’m screwed.
In their defense, your iPad is running a years-old version of iOS. It’s been ages since the release of the software that allows iPads to update themselves.
ETA: according to this, the best you can do is iOS 5

Well, that didn’t work out like I hoped.
does that actually work? AFAIK once a new version of iOS is “out there” for a bit, Apple will no longer sign older versions for installation.
I dont think you can down grade an OS rev level below a current rev level, like going from 8 to 6, but there is an overlap period between 7 and 8, incase apple borks the update. OP’s problem was that he was at IOS 4 going to 8 , and had not plugged it into pc itunes to find the update. Once he does that, 8 may very well show up.
But the shift update does work, instead of waiting a shit ton of hours to down load the update via itunes, down load directly and then update.

Well, I’m updating to 8.1 via my laptop. Syncing occurring now. The iTunes says that the current IOS is 4.3.3.
I’ll let you know how it goes but wanted to thank everyone in this thread for their help.
So the syncing occurred (the iPad went beep) but nothing seems to have changed. Under Settings–General doesn’t have any of the updated options that I should. Grrrrrrr.
