What with growing traffic on our Web message board and the usual turnover, the Straight Dope needs chat hosts and board moderators. Interested parties should write to tubadiva@aol.com for an application. You must be over 18. A fast computer and modem, a steady head, and lots of free time are big pluses. Not to mention the patience of a saint.

Were there really SD chat rooms?
Did they work out?
To the best of my knowledge there was never an official Straight Dope chat sponsored by the SDMB.
Since the question relates to the message board operation, not a Straight Dope column, this thread is leaving the «Comments on Cecil’s Columns» forum and going to visit my colleague TubaDiva in the «About This Message Board» forum.
P.S. Posters, please note the date on this thread! The announcement has obviously been superseded by other news since then.
moderator, «Comments on Cecil’s Columns»
So that thread lasted a year and five months in Comments on Cecil’s Columns without so much as a peep from the rabble? Odd. Very strange. Even stranger is that nobody moved it until just now. By the way, is the OP relevant in any way? We’ve gotten new mods since then, and I haven’t heard anything from #straightdope or whatever the IRC channel is called.
Am I the only one who’s reminded of that Simpsons episode where Bart, Milhouse, Martin, and Nelson get a car and go visit the Sun Sphere?
Naah, view this as an archaeological dig. We’ve uncovered an interesting relic from the past, a post by no less than Ed Zotti (whose name is not appearing below as I write this), and now we’re debating its present value.
Once upon a time, when we were on AOL, we had official Straight Dope chats.
We considered having them here, but have not implemented them. And now we probably won’t. Or at least not anytime soon.
