You just don’t get that kind of knowledge anywhere else! That’s what makes this community so great!
He’s just shoring up his position against all contenders to his SDMB Drama Queen throne.
It bears repeating: Lib, get back on your meds, and keep out of the pit. You’re going down that path again.
I have time to only quickly respond before I take off for my mountainous weekend.
I mentioned both you and MrDibble, as that was most of the back and forth. I wished only to quickly quell the snarkiness in the thread.
I readily admit that you two were not the only ones involved. As I had no interest in issuing warnings or any other documented admonishment, I felt that was good enough.
And now, Colorado wants me…
Thanks, Frank. No harm, no foul.
My take on this would be to get over it. The mods don’t always do what I think they shoud do, either. Your outrage seems disproportionate to the offense.
This is more problematic. Would you be satisfied if hand-stabber, godbotherer and fundie were all outlawed on these boards? Have they all been deemed hate-speech here?
Outrage? Could you point to a particular expression of “outrage”? I’m not even mad, much less outraged. And I’m not asking anyone to do anything special. There is a rule against ad hominem attacks outside the Pit. Period. It applies to me, to you, and to (almost) everyone.
As I said, my own preference is to allow people to speak freely. The membership will take care of putting people in their place when need be.
I think the problem, Lib, is that you expect even-handed fairness. Never gonna happen. I happen to prefer to think it might, but on this board as on others and in the real world, it’s too much to ask. I’ve realized that. It’s not a reality I like, but one can only tilt at windmills for so long.
Expectations, unrealized, cause grief. When you learn to release expectations, you suffer much less grief. An expectation that anything involving humans will be fair in every event is disappointment waiting to happen. C’est la vie.
I was almost with you until you got to :
That, my friend, is really kind of sad.
. . . and the moderators are here just to rubberstamp your complaints? Your view of the merits is obviously different from the mods’ view. Walk it off.
There you go again, generalizing from particulars. How you extrapolate such a generality from this would be a little confusing, if we weren’t all familiar with your solipsistic megalomania. It seems clear to me that this case was decided on its merits: that it was a case decided in favor of MrDibble vs. the poster currently known as Liberal; not as All Atheists vs. All Theists. It’s not always about you, Lib, but this time it’s *only *about you. To extrapolate from this that any decision against you is a slap in the face of all theists everywhere is pathological.
ETA: Below addressed to Euty (and Quid)
Yeah, but that came *way * after: “Yes, I know. My life is pathetic, but there it is.”
(Good advice, Quid. Thanks.)
And as usual, in the extended time-release formula.
Despite your and my enmity toward each other, you should care about this too. There’s no reason the same thing won’t bite your ass one day. The only reason you shouldn’t be concerned is if the rule was unenforced specifically because the insult was directed at me as opposed to being directed against anyone else. If that is the case, then you’re fine. But surely, that is not the case.
One hijack.
I grew in in Fairbanks Alaska. I’ve known plenty of Eskimos. I never once heard an Eskimo object to being called an Eskimo, and frequently heard Eskimos refer to themselves as Eskimos, although the term-of-art mostly used was “Native”, which could refer to either Indians or Eskimos or Aleuts.
Admittedly, I haven’t lived in Alaska for 10 years, so perhaps things have changed in that time. But reports of the offensiveness of the word “Eskimo” are greatly exaggerated.
If you had to settle for my brain, you’d struggle too!
That is not what the current thinking is.
Then you are going about it in exactly the wrong way. The only possible outcome of a thread like this would be to divide the posters into various groups of people supporting you, people supporting Tuba, people who want more moderation, people who want less, etc., etc. If, on the other hand, you wish to portray yourself as a martyr again, you’re doing exactly the right thing.
For those who are a little bemused by the term “godbotherer”, it’s from one of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books. One character, a wizard, asks a priest how the godbothering business is going. The wizard is certain that there ARE gods (a declaration of atheism, on Discworld, is generally followed by a lightning bolt or other divine retribution), and it happens that he’s just teasing the priest, who’s his brother. It’s exactly the sort of term that I’d expect from someone who uses the ID of MrDibble. which is the name of a recurring minor character in the Discworld series.
:smack:
Damn, I’m an idiot. I had the perfect opportunity to say with a straight face, “I’ll have you know, some of my best friends are Eskimos!” and I blew it. I’m a tool.
I believe there’s an important difference here you haven’t addressed. When the term “fundie” is used inside and outside of the Pit, I can think of no single occasion in which it has been used as to refer to another poster. Since we are free to be generally insulting towards people even outside the Pit as long as they are not other posters, I don’ t think there’s the equivalence you seem to be suggesting.
It’s also possible that you yourself might be banned from using hand-stabber personally while others are not. Sometimes posters are expected to follow different rules depending on past behaviour.
OTOH, if calling another poster a hand-stabber is banned for everyone, so should god-botherer.
Not quite. The term has been around for much, much longer than Terry Pratchett.
Is there really an issue with using the word Fundie or is Liberal making this up?
