Heh-I just did a google search of the SDMB. From March 1, 2000 to March 31, 2009 (roughly when this idiotic “naughty words” policy was put in place) there were 52 threads that mentioned the word “cunt”.

From March 31, 2009 to today? There were 51 threads–drop the “c-bomb” in two more threads and it’ll appear in more threads this year than in the entire history of the board prior to that rule.

Congrats folks, as a result of this stupid, nannyistic policy, you’ve increased the number of threads where the word “cunt” appears from roughly 9 threads a year to one thread per week. Boy, prohibition is effective, isn’t it?

And yeah, I think it was a bullshit banning too. The rule is very clear that you can’t call another poster a “cunt” not that you can’t use the word. Calling it “hate-speech” is indefensible*–if he used it at a poster? Absolutely: ban him. But just to repeat the word over and over isn’t “hate-speech”. You don’t like what Xploder did? Great–change the rule to reflect what you want and ban the word outright. No rules were broken. He wasn’t even doing the “I’m not touching you” since he wasn’t defying a rule–or even dancing around it

That’s actual evidence that the prohibition of the word has indeed made the situation worst. Also he didn’t break the “rules” in place. Who has been banned for doing such things previously? I mean you guys didn’t even do this on Carol Stream…

It was a joke and a bad one I agree why not just give him a warning that states this won’t be tolerated then when he defies it, if that was his intent all along ban him?

I think that the C-word is offensive in part because it says, in effect, that a woman is only valuable as a means of sexual gratification for males, and that she’s not even really a person.

Believe me when I tell you that when someone calls you a cunt, the very last thing they are thinking is in sexual gratification. I would buy that for “hoe” but certainly not for cunt. The word may have referred to the female genitalia at some point in history, ans some people may still use it for that when they talk about someone’s cunt, but when someone calls you a cunt the intention is to be insulting. It has nothing to do with sex just like “fucking idiot” doesn’t mean an idiot engaged in sex.

So please stop pretending it is hate speech. It may be unnecessarily rude and vulgar but it is not hate speech.

If you really thought it to be hate speech, you would ban it’s use against anyone. Not just other posters.

Not universally, however what pains me most is Rico’s inability to distinguish between the words “flout” and “flaunt”:

I supose you could parse it that he was flouting the rule and then flaunting the flouting, but then you wouldn’t need the modifier, since you can’t accidentally flaunt something.

I’m not seeing your point in that thread. There is consensus on how nasty the word is but that still doesn’t make it hate speech nor it means that people who use it are thinking of their target as sexual objects. I stand by my take that it is used just for shock value. That people call others cunts just because they know it will offend.
