bbs2k seems to have really gone off the rails since VC03 got the boot. At least in my opinion.
And as for this topic… I visit at least one of the boards ranked higher than the SDMB, running vB, and never have any “technical difficulties” on them.

I didn’t think you were being rude. I simply thought that someone else might be able to answer the question.
By this time it looks like I care about this more than I really do. It was a minor question.
Jim
Just as a reminder here: the moderators have neither knowledge nor control nor input to the technical aspects of board upgrades. We don’t respond to threads about such, because we have nothing to say.
In the interest of fairness, I’ll say that the boards do have ads (and avatars, and all that stuff), but are free. I’d imagine that a few ads would generate a lot more income than a few paying members, so it’s not fair to compare the 2.
And yes, it appears this board now has some ads aside from the Goggle links, but really not even in the same league as lots of ads all over a page.
You know, I think that there may be the source of a lot of our frustration here. Neither the moderators nor TubaDiva (the lone admin who actually reads and posts here on a regular basis) have anything to do with anything about the technical side of running this message board.
And the people that can and do affect the technical side of this board neither read nor post here all that often. Jerry, as far as I can tell, never reads or posts here except in direct response to being told that there is a technical issue. Ed drops in once in a great while, but that amounts to, what, once a year maybe?
All those other boards are owned by and/or run by people who care about how they function. The people who own and run this board have absolutely no interest in what happens here, as far as I can tell. Is it any wonder things never seem to run smoothly?
I wish I could use that excuse at my job. “Sorry boss, but the financial database is just too darn big for us to upgrade the user interface.”
Please get it straight. Wednesday is rag on LynnBodoni day. THURSDAY is rag on Tuba day.
At least your subscription will be up in the next month or so, and then you can vote with your wallet. You will be missed, but many will reflect that perhaps you have delighted us too much.
Ok, I am sincerely confused. Do you really like me, or are you being snarky?
At least you care enough to know when I am due. And yes, I do plan to vote with my wallet as I always keep telling people to. I am nowhere near a decision yet, but I will consider if the entertainment value I get from all this is worth the price. That has nothing to do with this thread, though.
The buddy got suspended because he lost his meds about a month ago and has been acting weird for attention’s sake. Not for having an opinion. Are you saying I should stick my nose on some TPTB’s arse and hope for their benevolence? THAT doesn’t sound like you at all.
And your add on is exactly what I am pitting. Simple question, thread locked without an answer. As I said, a simple “we do not have an answer at this time” would have been a good answer. The ostrich maneuver, not so much.
Personally, he’s always seemed like an attention-starved troll to me.
Have some grace friend, he’s not here or able to defend himself if he were.
No it was just a dumb joke with a hint of: Tread lightly, I hope you stick around.
oh. I will thread lightly then.
A month? And he hasn’t done anything about it? Scary and probably dangerous IRL.
IMHO, of course.
In an effort to actually answer the question…
vBulletin 3.0.7 was released in February '05, so it can’t be any earlier than that. I didn’t find any threads started by Ed about upgrading in ATMB around that time, but I did find this thread by Squink, named “test 3.0.7” which would seem to indicate that we had updated by then. It was posted March 31, 2005.
I just realized (after he posted in ATMB about the banner ad issue), it would have made sense to look up Jerry, rather than Ed (or both), to see if he had posted, since he would have been the one doing the work. I did and didn’t find anything there either.
True enough. My apologies for the inadvertent cheap shot.
I gotta say I was pretty surprised to see myself defended in the linked thread. I was out of line, IMHO. I can see why people were otherwise annoyed, it looks like Tuba used my asshole-ishness as an excuse to close the thread. However, as evidenced by What Exit’s closed thread on the software update, Tuba doesn’t need an excuse to close an ATMB thread. She pretty much closes them on reflex.
A partial answer to What Exit’s question is probably just under 3 years. Version 3.0.7, which is what we currently use, rolled out as an emergency patch in February 2005. ETA: Shit, didn’t see Garfield’s post.
Thanks guys, it seems like we haven’t been on this version as long as I feared.
My own thoughts and Tuba’s post had me wondering if it was back to 2000 or 2001.
Jim
Well, like I mentioned, it was an emergency security patch. Not sure I can give them a lot of credit for “deciding” to update at the time.
FYI: the Dope used to run on UBB software instead of vB, and they switched sometime in 2000. There’s no announcement post but cluescan be divined from older [post=957525]mixed threads[/post] that were bumped.
