"Tube" in song titles

I find it odd that a lot of songs have the word “tube” in it. For example, the band Phish has three of these songs: “First Tube”, “Last Tube”, “Fresh Tube”, and there is a song called “Mystery Tube” by the song Galactic.

I was wondering if “Tube” in a song title means anything, or just something with no meaning.

What about the phish song “Tube”

That too (though I don’t think I’ve heard it).

And to correct myself so some crazy phan doesn’t do it for me, “Fresh Tube” is a Vida Blue song, “First Tube” a Phish song and “Last Tube” a Trey Anastasio recording. Since all three are very much related I grouped them together.

There’s also ZZ Top’s “Tube Snake Boogie” ("She won’t do it but her sister will!) I think it’s obvious what sort of tube they’re thinking of here

Well in London, the tube= the underground (subway)

I’m a music ignoramus, so I don’t know the songs you mention.
But in surfer slang, a tube is a cool thing - it refers to the shape of a big wave when the crest curls forward, and the surfer can shoot through the resultant tube. Hence the slang phrase “Totally tubular, dude!” Could this be an influence?

I haven’t heard any of the songs mentioned in this thread, but since it’s Phish we’re talking about, ‘tube’ probably refers to the phrase ‘pull tubes’. It means ‘to smoke marijuana from a bong.’

Wait!

I think I hear something …

(Turns head all the way around 360 degrees …)

Aw, just Tubular Bells

Down in the Tube Station at Midnight, by the Jam. Not an answer to the OP, but a great song nonetheless…

Another possible influencing factor here is that, in French, ‘tube’ is a slang term for a record or song. Given the French propensity for shoehorning English words into a phrase to make it more ‘cool’, I can see how ‘First tube’ or ‘Last tube’ might come about. Are any of the bands mentioned above French?

Phish certainly isn’t. They are a psychodelic/experimental rock band something along the lines of The Grateful Dead and occasionally similar to early Pink Floyd.

Not to say Phish is just like either band, but if you like either of the other two, you stand a good chance of liking them.

I think the Bee Gees did a song titled “Tube Be Or Not Tube Be.”

I think Glassy is spot-on with the surfing reference, at least as far as “First Tube”–as in, the first such wave of the day. The song (an instrumental) has sort of a surf-rock sound. I think Trey’s “Last Tube” and Vida Blue’s “Fresh Tube” grew out of it.

“Tube” itself, though (which used to be fairly rare–it got more common there for a while, after they broke it out in Dayton (I was there!), and it’s on the Hampton box set) is probably just some of Tom Marshall’s jacked-up lyrics. “So stupendous, living in this tube.”

BTW, I got “Round Room” in the mail today. On first listen, it rocks my ass!
