I saw Tuck last night with my family, and we liked it overall. It had many changes from the book, but it was still good in its own way.
The main difference was that Winnie was several years older than she was in the book, which made possible more of a romantic angle which was only slightly touched upon in the novel. The film also spiced up the action a bit. The book is really quite low-key (though very moving in the end) for the most part, while the film tried to have a little more drama and romance. The girl playing Winnie was lovely as could be, and the young man playing Jesse was (I must admit) a real cutie.
Though I was at least a little disappointed in how some of the scenes were handled, I must say that William Hurt was indeed perfect for the role of Angus Tuck, as I expected he would be, and Ben Kingsley was a pleasant surprise as the enigmatic Man in the Yellow Suit.
All in all, Disney’s version of Tuck was good. Those who love the book as my wife and I do will note many differences, but the film is still good as a whole. The themes reamin the same, even if the story is a little different. It definitely sparked an interesting discussion with my daughters.
