TuftAndNeedle mattresses - anyone have one?

I am in the process of moving interstate, not taking my old mattresses with me. Going through the mattress buying process again is, by past experience, expensive, annoying and frustrating. Someone recommended the tuftandneedle.com mattress to me - so - has anyone here bought their mattresses and used them? What do you think?

My wife is kinda dismissing it as “a futon mattress” but they have the 10" version and Amazon reviews seem positive, though some people are pointing to the plethora of 1-review reviewers among them…

Well, I have never heard of this company before. But, just using information found on their website, I can come to a few conclusions.

  • Their mattresses are just foam covered in cotton. Not memory foam; just plain foam. They claim it is a medium firm foam.
  • Their mattresses are still expensive. The queen size 10" mattress is $500. While standard mattresses can get much more expensive than $500, many of them are at that price point or cheaper while still offering excellent comfort and quality.
  • They use the “portability” of their mattresses as a big selling point. Make sure this is of use to you, and if not, re-evaluate their claims accordingly.
  • As for foam mattresses in general, compared to traditional, they are not so much fun in the “recreational/procreational” department. Consider this carefully; while some foam mattresses are absolutely great at providing a good night’s sleep, the simply do not provide the “springiness” some couples have gotten used to for other activities. My wife and I passed on foam.

HTH.

One question: Do you really want to buy a mattress online, without having tested it in person? Personally, I don’t. (And actually I bought a new mattress on Saturday. I went to a local mattress store, tried out several of them, selected one and it was delivered Sunday morning.)

Supposedly IKEA has some inexpensive mattresses, but again, I’d recommend trying one out before buying it.

I would also recommend buying one where they have a trial period. Sometime what feels ok in the store doesn’t after sleeping on it.

I just bought one after returning the first purchase. I love the new one which is a hybrid spring and foam with organic cotton.

The tuftandneedle mattress has a cotton/poly cover. This would be a no for me. Also, they don’t say what kind of foam so I assume it is a petroleum by-product and not latex. Another no.

That’s the selling point of tuftandneedle.com - they have a 30 day no-questions-asked return period, where they pay for shipping.

The mattress store from which I bought a mattress over the weekend has a three-month return policy. IKEA has a 90-day return policy.

Sorry to go off-topic, but I always find it funny when mattresses use their appearance as part of the marketing. Tuft and Needle says “Minimalism that compliments any room.” I’ve seen TV commercials mention the pattern on the mattress too. Who uses their mattress as decor? Doesn’t everyone have sheets on their mattress at pretty much all times? Am I weird?

The TEN model Tuft & Needle mattress is wonderful. Highly recommended.
