Can anyone tell me the origin of the expression “My love came tumbling down” and what it means?

I ‘Googled’ it, and it’s a line in a few songs.
This one from Buddy Holly:
The whole world was my kingdom
and your love the gem in my crown.
Then I saw you glance at a new romance
and my love came tumbling down.

Perhaps the original source is Jack and Jill:
